Underrated book. Initial concept was review of irrigation in the western United States. (See Progress Report on Irrigation . . . for 1890.) Concept then morphed into a complete review of irrigation practices in the United States. Not being content with the breadth of that topic authors went on to review current irrigation practices throughout the world and then the ages. Thus, there are chapters on Australia, Algerian Sahara, Egypt and so on. Plus, a large number of 19th century photos and maps of the American Southwest that are not seen in any other sources.
