This is the perfect graphic novel for anyone who loves all things fall. The story is cute and light; mixed with a little bit of apprehension as the two main characters sort out their feelings about going away to college and themselves and each other.

Faith Erin Hicks’ Avatar: The Last Airbender – Azula in the Spirit Temple features art by Peter Wartman, colors by Adele Matera, and letters by Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt. The story takes place shortly after the events of Avatar. Azula leads a band of women whose parents placed them in an institution for failing to conform to expectations. With them, she harries the Fire Nation in order to harass her brother, Fire Lord Zuko. Working to stop her is her former friend, Ty Lee, now one of the Kyoshi Warriors. Azula finds herself in a temple where a spirit confronts her with the friends and family for whom she holds the most enmity. Rather than make her peace, she challenges them and demands they beg her forgiveness. While this fails to provide her the peace that the spirit offers, she does find a sort of peace in seeing her new band forge their own bonds without her. A fun continuation for the fans, but it reads like a standalone episode rather than part of a larger story arc. That said, Hicks’ writing admirably captures the tone of the show while Wartman and Matera’s art beautifully brings it to vivid life.½

I probably would have loved this had it come out when I was in 4th/5th grade. The illustrations were nice and colorful.

3 Stars

Just a quick comic to finish up my unread Lumberjanes. Ripley finds a ghost pony (EEEEE!!!!) and something evil is lurking nearby to get to it. Girl power to the rescue! As usual, great graphics and a fun quick story.

Setting and tone similar to Avatar the Last Airbender, but it's historical fiction, instead of fantasy. Would probably appeal to fans of Zita because of the action and clever, loyal protagonists.

Another wonderful graphic novel by Faith Erin Hicks. I've collected a lot of Hicks' comics over the years, and I've loved pretty much all of them. I've been meaning to get around to this ever since Hicks started talking about it, and I'm sad it took me so long to finally get to it, but I'm glad I finally gave it a proper chance, because it's very good. The art is gorgeous, as usual, the characters are wonderful, and the story is phenomenal.

One of my favorite things about "Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong" is that it's one of the best depictions of being a child of divorcees, and generally Hicks is very good at depicting the children of parents who are separated for one reason or another, and that is again well-handled here. My one criticism is mixed because I think it's accurate to the narrative/relationship to have Ezra's mother kind of force him to hang out with the maybe soon to be stepfather. It's what I'm used to, it's what a lot of parents getting new partners do with their kids from previous relationships don't get along with their new partners. I just have issues when parents do this. While Ezra's issues stem from very strong fears, I don't think this really solves the issue. It's mostly just treating him like a spoiled child. But I also know my issues stem from my own dissatisfaction with my own family attempting to this, particularly since my own stepparents are both assholes and my disliking them has nothing to do with remarriage. So yes, it's accurate, uncomfortably so. It works for the narrative, it's just not enjoyable for me.

This is also a really great depiction of setting boundaries, openness, and validation in relationships, and means of being supportive. All in all, a nice book. Well worth the time.

This is a 3.5 star review really. I'm still thinking about this one and trying to decide what to say. Graphic novels are frequently like short stories, with about the same amount of narrative content. FWB is successful as a taste, content to not do too much or pull together too tightly woven of a story.

Queer subtext abounds, but there's no text. Love Hicks' artwork as always.

My favorite parts about this were the beautiful autumnal colors and the overall atmosphere of the pumpkin patch! I used to work at a pumpkin patch/orchard, and the book really nailed it in that respect! Also, all those fall foods made me super hungry - they looked sooo yummy.
The plot was very middle of the road for me: it was cute, but insanely predictable. I can't help but wish there was something MORE to it! I liked the characters; however, they got put in a uber basic storyline that offers no surprises or anything particularly original. The art and atmosphere were just so vibrant that the plot just pales in comparison.
Either way, "Pumpkinheads" is a great pick (lol) for an autumn weekend read! It's fluffy and fun and I think a lot of people will enjoy it.

*Art style reminded me of Brian Lee O'Malley meets Jillian Tamaki, who are two of my favorite graphic novelists! Visually this was superrrr pleasing to me because I loved the art style. It had sort of this fluid, urban, inky feel to it that was enjoyable to see. The character designs and silhouettes are so well drawn! Alistair and Lucy look really cool here!

*This is a somewhat mild storyline. Simply put, it's a high school coming-of-age story. Less simply put, it follows Maggie as she attends public high school for the first time after being homeschooled by her mother. She has three brothers who also attend, and they each kinda sorta have their own tiny plots. It's mainly about Maggie finding her place in school and coming to terms with the fact that her mom is no longer a part of her life.

*Honestly, this isn't a super phenomenal or dramatic graphic novel. It's pretty subtle, and something about that hooked me. I liked this! Again, it's simple, but Faith Erin Hicks has captured a lovely picture of the melancholy feel that comes with growing up and the hope that comes with new friends and family. Plus, there's a cool little ghost element to it!

For a great example of utilizing the format of a graphic novel, for a whole lot of laughs, for some awwwws as well, for a sweet yet deep story with perfectly matching art

Thoughts:
Oh, man. I didn't think I would love this so much, but here I am, whipping out the five stars. I loved the art style. It had a solidly matching style and color scheme to the story, and they did a fantastic job of telling small stories within the story through the art. Tracking the goat through the park was amazing!

The story was, obviously, wonderful. It's not every day that you can have discussions about fate versus choice and not be bored out of your skull or sent into a spiral of despair (oh, is that just me?). And back to the overarching story, what starts out as a pretty simple plot develops into a unique and nuanced journey through the Patch.

Did I mention how much I laughed? Because I was in a coffee shop reading this and I laughed out loud, probably kind of obnoxiously, multiple times. Good thing I was able to stuff my mouth with cake to muffle it. There are so many amazing lines and images! You get a good sense of the characters early on, which is both difficult and critical in a graphic novel since there's usually less space to develop them. 100% fantastic. Added my vote for this to the Goodreads Choice Awards immediately after I finished.

Trigger Warnings: homophobia, bully, domestic abuse

After Alix lashes violently out at her rude and mean teammate, Lindsay, she knows she needs to control her anger. So, she goes to Ezra; the cool, calm theater kid from her grade, for help. As they begin to hang out more and more, Alix learns there’s more to Ezra than the levelheaded front she puts on. And maybe, there’s something more than just friendship forming…

This is a cute YA graphic novel romance with a bit of the gender roles switched than what you usually see in rom-coms.

I enjoyed the storyline and the chemistry between the two felt genuine and wasn’t that insta-romance. I do however wish the ending was a little longer, so it could flush out a little more of the story better.

Overall though, I will be recommending to those who enjoyed the author's other works, like Pumpkinhead by Rainbow Rowell, and the series Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu. And those that like a cute YA graphic romance.

This is was a super powerful read and using some of your favorite characters to share this powerful story was really impactful. It has dived into aspects of racism and also how racism is represented in different populations. it also had some elements of and some quotes that really stuck to with me. I loved seeing the gang back together and the new characters we met.

* I got this book for review from the publisher*

I really thought this book was the prefect fall read. I thought this book wad so fun. I wish the 'adventuring" and traveling thought the pumpkin patch on their mission was extended a tad. But I really loved the focus on friendship and had elements of romance that I enjoyed. This novel graphic novel style was prefect. If you are fans of stories like the prince and dressmaker, this should be a read that you check out!

I really enjoyed this romeo and Juliet inspired contemporary read! I found it to be a fun read and so much superhero and creativity love. I really enjoyed both POV and loved how both characters were dealing with self discovery issues as well! I would rec. this read i you like geekerella! I thought the book followed a pretty "normal" plot path but was a fun read. I was equally invested in both POV. It also addressed life topics like changing friends group, passion and leaving home for college. I found this to a be quick read but very fun!

This was such a fun and amusing book! Meet Superhero Girl (that's not really her real superhero name, but well she lives in Canada...) as she tries to find her place in the world out of the shadow of her brother Kevin's super-heroic infamy.

She saves cats, helps old ladies cross the street, battles ninjas, deals with a skeptical obnoxious superhero fanboy and searches for an archnemsis (who won't steal her job and become rich from giving up a life of crime).

These are loosely connected comics ranging from a few panels to a few pages, that mostly pick up from where the other left off (except when it goes into the past as Superhero Girl chose to strike out on her own, about half way through the book).

I know Hicks' artwork and charm from the short comics that are occasionally featured on Tor.com (for fannish things--reactions to movies and such). This is my first time reading an original work of hers and I loved it. Perfect for all ages with colorful artwork and plenty of humor.

The book begins by having Superhero Girl doing stuff you don't see heroes doing much of nowadays; their own laundry (how to deal with a shrunk cape!), explaining their weird disappearances to roommates and friends, saving cats (even if they don't want to be saved). At first this really is just a book of 'day in the life of a superhero' with only the title character tying them together.

It changes when we start to learn more about her past and meet her brother Kevin. SG was his sidekick back in their hometown and while this seemed fine and dandy for him, she wanted something more. Wanted to be recognized on her own merits. The scene where she explains to him is heart breaking on both sides. Kevin clearly doesn't want her to strike out on her own, but he let's her because he's unselfish. Equally I don't think SG wanted to hurt him or leave him in the dust, but she couldn't find an identity.

Anyone with a sibling can understand. I know I surely can. Its like 'But wait...why can't we go back to you following me around and thinking I'm the super coolest?'

At any rate I think this will please just about anyone. Hicks draws and writes for an all ages crowd, but doesn't sacrifice impact.

A gentle screwball comedy (one of my favorite genres), set in a giant fall-themed pumpkin patch attraction (my favorite time of year), written by Rainbow Rowell and drawn by Faith Erin Hicks (two of my favorite creators ever). It's a lightweight story, but the dialogue and pacing are quick, funny, and assured in a way that sets it apart from similar comics.

Such a cozy, fun read. As I type the words, I am filled with an overpowering longing for cider. (Here Rowell and I will have to differ; I am a New Englander and apples, not pumpkins, are the #reasonfortheseason.)
