- William Herschel was a German-born musician and astronomer who was appointed "the King's Astronomer" for George III of England. He worked with his sister Caroline throughout his career, during which he became famous for the discovery of Uranus and other important heavenly bodies. He also discovered infrared radiation in 1800.
