Sull'Autore

Jeffrey Hemmer is the husband of (in his opinion) the most wonderful woman in the world, father of the five most delightful children he's ever met, and pastor of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairview Heights, Illinois. He's also a wannabe farmer, maker of some things, fixer of other mostra altro things, beard grower, and general curmudgeon. His big truck is probably a sign of his insecurity. mostra meno

"The essence of masculinity is not rugged independence. It is sacrificial giving." Location 99

"In the City of the Same, diversity of people with uniformity of thinking is the only decree." Page 76

On page 104, I enjoyed the illustration from a Latin Bible which said in the margin, "Hic Genuflectitur," when the book of John said, "The Word became flesh."

"The following tale is told about a coarse and and brutal lout. While the words "And was made man" were being sung in church, he remained standing, neither genuflecting nor removing his hat. He showed no reverence, but just stood there like a clod. All the others dropped to their knees when the Nicene Creed was prayed and chanted devoutly. Then the devil stepped up to him and hit him so hard it made his head spin. He cursed him gruesomely and said: "May hell consume you, you boorish ass! If God had become an angel like me and the congregation sang, "God was made an angel," I would bend not only my knees but my whole body to the ground! Yes, I would crawl ten ells down to the ground. And you vile human creature, you stand there like a stick or a stone. You hear that God did not become an angel but a man like you, and you stand there like a stick of wood!" LW 22:105

"The belly is relatively easy to discipline, but it's the gateway to the body's other desires. Especially for men, learning that the belly is not your god through fasting is a stepping stone on the path to learning that neither are your reproductive organs in control of you. In many ways, disordered hunger is no different from lust, disordered sexual desire." Page 271.

Lies people believe:

God rewards you for being good.

A woman is only as valuable as her beauty, or worse, her sex appeal.

If you work hard, you can do anything you want.

The child growing inside your wife's womb is not a living person worthy of protection.

God wants you to be happy.

Sex is a commodity that can be traded or sold.

Marriage isn't forever.

Children are a burden.

There is no absolute truth.

Boys and girls should be treated the same page 274-5
