A celebration of mass market items for the home, this book has such a British and European focus that it will have only passing appeal for most American readers, who won't recognize the specific items. Who even knew there was something called a "teamade". The author's off-the-wall text is sometimes amusing.

An excellent book, subtitled "A Celebration of Everyday Design" that basically looks at the homewares we all actually had during a period covering the 1950s to the 1980s, with the main concentration on the 60s and 70s. Lots of things that Matthew and I remember from our childhoods, great archive pictures from magazines and catalogues, and text that is tongue-in-cheek at times but no nasty or faux-ironic. A really fun read.

This book is a wierd journey through kitsch art - most of this stuff is from the 50's and 60's. Parts of it I really love, like the section on Vladimir Tretchikoff. The author Wayne Hemingway clearly loves this stuff - I think it is a great book but a wee bit too heavy on the Big-Eyes variations (perhaps half the book). I didn't realize how much big eye art there was, the stuff popularized by Keane is just a small sample. If you have any interest in this stuff you will really enjoy the book. Nice large high quality photos of the art prints.… (altro)
