I might draw a more favorable conclusion about this book as poetry if I read the text rather than listening to the audio.

This book would be good for primary students. This book is "Remember" by Joy Harjo, illustrated by Michaela Goade, and published in 2023. This book is a poem that reminds young readers to pause and reflect on the world around them. It brings in the culture of the Mvskoke Nation that we are connected to the earth and that we should cherish life. I think this would be a good book to have in a classroom just for independent reading to introduce people to other culture and to have a wide representation of cultures.

Remember is a picture book that's a poem about wondering about the world and where you came from. The readers are invited into the illustrations and language to ponder the origins of life and how we're all connected. I thought the illustrations were absolutely gorgeous! The way the illustrator made the art was fantastic and it blew me away.

I liked this book as well, but for certain scenarios. If I taught at a Christian school, I wouldn't use this book in my classroom, only because it centers around a creation/life worldview that is conflictive of ours as Christians. But, if I taught in public school, I would definitely use this book because it's truly very beautiful and I think children would love it.

Holy crepe, I was not ready for this book. It combines the raw emotion of Harjo's poems with a very difficult personal history, similar to the book Educated. I am impressed by Harjo's artistry and I would like to read more of her work, but for now I need some time to process everything I've read.

Michaela Goade's gorgeous artwork, Joy Harjo's poem. I especially love the illustration that accompanies the lines, "Remember your birth, how your mother / struggled to give you form and breath. // You are evidence of her life, / and her mother's, and hers."

Some stand-out poems here. Others were less noticeable but still a beautiful collection.

Reflections on history and navigating the present. Interesting to see her growth of ideas and perspective over quite a lifetime so far, and the influence of a national audience.

this book would be great for intermediate and middle school students. This book is a poem about how you should remember all aspects of life like the moon, sunrise, and animals because they all make up life in general. I really like this book because of the gorgeous illustrations and message, but I would have older kids read it because the poem may be confusing for younger students

[[Joy Harjo]] belongs in the canon of great American poets, not just for her reinvigoration of Native voices, but simply because her own voice is so achingly evocative. A slim book, but powerful in its brevity. These are ones to savor one at a time over several days, and to reread many times over. These are not the typical modern verses, obscured to the point of unintelligibility. Rather, each stanza, each line, drips in layers of meaning and cut to the quick of the human condition, regardless of cultural connections, though those add another much deeper layer.

Highly Recommended!!!!!

Musical and magical, this little book of poetry is a comforting read, that addresses the ills of the US as well as the beauty of the earth and the joys of living.

This is a poem of words that sparkle with exquisite illustrations, calling the reader to remember the wonders of the world and their impact on us.
The poem is written by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, and the stunning illustrations by Michaela Goade a Caldecott Medal winner.

We are called to remember the sky that we were born under and to know each of the star's, the moon, the sun, the sundown, your parents, the earth which includes plants, trees, animal life and tribes, families and the history contained in them.

This is a call to embrace the world and all that it contains, and to remember "the universe is you."

FIVE STARS

Here is some of the incredible art work of Michaela Godae

Another book that had been on my to-read list for a while, then I picked it up at the library when I spied it on the National Poetry Month display. Beautiful, mournful, inspiring, all the feelings. Another collection that is a mix of traditional poetry, short essays, quotes, and other tidbits -- deliberately creating and enriching the context the poems exist in. I love this format and found it very effective.

This collection is loosely shaped around the Trail of Tears, moving backward and forward in time to explore the dislocations and absences, the culture, homes, and relationships lost, but also finding joy in what remains, in reclaiming memory, in forging new identities and new traditions in the ashes of what was left.

A powerful collection.

She Had Some Horses remains my favorite, but some beautiful pieces in here. Loved A Postcolonial Tale. I'm ever grateful to my sister for introducing me to Harjo, she deserves endless accolades.

This is the first book I've read by author Joy Harjo. Her writing and poetry are amazing. I connected easily with her and my heart and soul were troubled by her troubled and lifted up through her poetry shared in the book. I now want to read more of Joy Harjo's work. A must read in my view.

Fifty selected poems by the author on the fiftieth anniversary of her first publication are accompanied by her notes on the inspiration and origin of each one. Fifty lyrics of love, heartbreak, despair, grief, anger, and protest against the treatment of women, especially indigenous females and the loss of ancient homelands to European settlers.

Harjo, a member of the Muscogee Nation (Este Mvskokvlke) served as the United States Poet Laureate from 2019 to 2022. She is also a musician and an author of both fiction and nonfiction works.

I read this book a few years ago, and noticed, when preparing to review his most recent novel Squeeze Me that I had not listed it.As usual for Carl, excellent.

For some of the darlings of the literary world wot have thousands of reviews here on LibraryThing while such a beautifully lyric author like [[Joy Harjo]] top have none is nothing short of tragedy. This slim volume is packed with keen insights told in rhythmic, evocative language. Some are prose poems, almost narrative in feel, and others are more traditional poetic structure. But everything is honed to a sharp edge. Life-affirming and quickening, all she has to say resonates like a tuning fork imbedded firmly in the soul. There's a reason she was the United States Poet Laureate for multiple terms; if only more of the reading world was paying attention to her. I started my year with her memoir [Crazy Brave] and ended my year with her here - I'm so glad.

5 bones!!!!!
Highly recommended

Summer 2021 (July);

I started a grand quest through a large assortment of poetry & short story collections recommended from my APSI (AP Summer Institute) for AP Literature, and this is one of the many as you will see.

Another piece by Joy Harjo, previous Poet Laureate, this was another gorgeous and glorious collection of the indigenous experience. I love the way she plays with words, and how she doesn't explain to the read piece meal everything as it's happening but allows for the reader to grow and learn through the over-arcing messages across her pieces.

Catching the Light by Joy Harjo, part of the Why I Write series, offers both wonderful insight into her writing life as well as inspiring perspective on the power of words, especially poetry.

This is the third book in this series I have read and what makes them powerful is that they are all very personal. In this volume we get a glimpse into Harjo's early life, how contemporary lives are in conversation with past and future lives, and what can be accomplished with words. The things fulfilled through writing are personal (as in making her life better), cultural (both within and between cultures), and political (at the very least through making people see others as human beings rather than labels).

This is one of those books that will reward returning to the book in the future. Whether I come back to the volume as a whole or revisit particularly compelling chapters, I know that I will be coming back to it. For comfort, for stimulation, and for inspiration.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys Harjo's poetry as well as those who like looking behind the curtain of great writers. This also will be a great source of inspiration (yeah, I have said that a lot, but it fits) for writers who might be wondering why they write.
