After reading Harbour's edition of Game Programming All in One, I was a little disappointed by this book. He takes a similar approach of an evolutionary example, taking a single game from simple vectors to a full-blown 2D game. The part I was struggling with is that in a lot of places his programming style seems very un-Java, like he's trying to force Java to work like C rather than embracing the platform. If you're a beginner, this'll be a good book, but if you're already strong in Java or some similar programming language, I would recommend Developing Games in Java instead.… (altro)

This was a fun book for learning the basics of 2D game development. Harbour uses C and the popular Allegro library to take a basic game called "Tank War" from a single-person vector demo to a two-player fully bitmapped game with sound and joystick support. If you're looking to start out in game development, I really recommend beginning here. Programming experience isn't required but is most likely helpful.
