One of the best books I've listened to in ages. Not a romance, but in a way, a love story between a mother and daughter. Elaine and Mina (Jasmina). Two women who lead such interior lives, one with a secret, the other forever wanting the truth from her mother, though when it comes, there's no relief.

It makes you realise what needless suffering we bring on ourselves, and that sometimes that suffering is like a drug, We need it to feel something, and we'd so much rather feel something than nothing. But what is meant to replace that suffering? Indifference? Complacency?

It is superb writing, and excellent narration by Liesl Pieterse. It won the Victoria Premier's Literary Award in 2019.
