This book was very disappointing. I had hoped for a reflective, thoughtful discussion, and assumed the editor would have assembled the best arguments on the topic, but in fact, that is not what I got. It was a mishmash of ideas, some good, some bad, but very few well developed and compelling.

The title is very misleading because this book is very much against capital punishment. It talks about ancient blood feuds as the only means to resolve disputes and the gradual change to common law. It compares capital punishment to human sacrifice because in a superstitious community, it would give the illusion of safety. They always chose those most on the outside of the community like unmarried women, (not marriageable virgins like in the movies) and those with physical or mental defects. Today the biggest percentage of those who get the death penalty fall into some sort of marginalized place in society. This is an important book and needs to be read by all who seek to abolish the death penalty. And those who are for it, they will definitely have something to think about.… (altro)
