The Second World War contains vivid details of all the major events; the fall of France, the Western Desert, Hitler's fatal attack on Russia, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Victory in Europe and the defeat of Japan. This series is richly illustrated with nearly twenty thousand photographs and informative drawings and maps, which create a memorable and vivid portrait of war.Reprinted from contemporary accounts, this superb series is the most comprehensive work on the Second World War ever published. Its scope ranges from Hitler's Blitzkrieg, which crushed Poland in 1939, to the unconditional surrender of Japan six years later. In this savage war millions of lives were lost or changed forever. Week by week throughout the conflict the magazine War Illustrated recorded front-line accounts from war correspondents and fighting men. These accounts reveal not only the horror and bleakness of war, but tell the courage and humour of the men and women involved.Final Battles Recalled
-- Allies sign Peace Treaties
-- Berlin Divided
-- Prisoners of War Released
-- Victory Parades
-- Unrest in Palestine
-- Nurenburg Trial
-- Roll of Honor

The history of all the kings and queens of England is included in this book, as well as stories of their coronations. A truly interesting look at English Royal history.½

At best - patronizing and condescending. At worst - racist.

Racist British 'humor' by 'the leading wits of the age.' Selections culled from Punch magazine to illustrate "the cream of our national humor." This text's only value is as documentation of racism then... and perhaps now.½

'literally true that no Household interest has been neglected', July 24, 2014

This review is from: Harmsworth's Household Encyclopedia. 6 volume set (Hardcover)
A wonderful compendium for the 21st century reader: both from a practical point of view - these volumes will tell you EVERYTHING you could ever need for the home: (pattern for a bathing dress; playing the banjo; dealing with arsenic poisoning; constructing a camp bed...I'm just thumbing through the first volume) but also from an historic point of view - the dated information is often quite entertaining.
I loved the article on 'The Art of Shopping', which encourages the shopper to know what they want: 'If you wander about with no fixed intention and ask for some material to make underclothes, and with pride, or with shame, or a giggle, protest that you are not sure of the difference between linen-lawn and nainsook, you place yourself at a disadvantage'. Also to teach the young how to spend their money wisely in the manner of 'such prodigies as one Alfred, aged eight, of my intimate acquaintance, who, when given a pound to spend as he liked, took 12 hours to decide, and then decided he would like a War Bond.'
With lead-in articles by such important persons as Mrs Belloc Lowndes, and every page featuring b/w photos or diagrams, this is a WONDERFUL collection.

My dad brought these back from a jumble sale and I read them over and over again, usually on wet weekends. They are gazeteers of the major towns in Britain, including local history and folklore. An amazing collection of information.

Many famous illustrators represented: Phil May, John Leech, John Tenniel, etc etc. Not a lot has changed on the railways, e.g. late trains, irritating fellow passengers.

This is one of the first "in the footsteps" of Robert Louis Stevenson, whose best works were his auto-biographical travel journals.

In 1903 Hammerton re-traced Stevenson's 1873 ten-day hiking trip ("Travels with a donkey in the Cevennes") through the Cevennes mountains in south-central France, except on a bicycle instead of a donkey, taking many pictures and even meeting a few people who remembered Stevenson. He then bicycled along the canals as originally detailed in "An Inland Voyage" (1870), Stevenson's first book. Later chapters are less Stevenson-specific but also in France. Hammerton heavily quotes Stevenson and shows a wonderful eye for the romance of France that Stevenson also captured. Hammerton's trip was only about 25 years after Stevenson so much remained the same and his descriptions and feel for the place are very authentic and help further fill in the picture of rural France in the later 19th century, a period still medieval in some ways but also quickly modernizing.

A fabulous book from the days when so many people's only experience of foreign countries was to read about them. Densely worded yet never too verbose, i was enchanted by the articles that are as far away from where i am in time as they are in space. While i am yet to track down another volume in the series, i live in hope.
