Romances written in 1998 just don’t age well. This dragged on even though the premise was good.

Abstract

This case study is about incorporating popular melodies into sight-singing methods in
a high school choral program. There are so many old and new methods available from
method books to new websites used for sight-singing. Sight-singing is something
almost all teachers do, but we seldom incorporate the music that most of our students
are listening to.
Students were given two different worksheets. The first was given as a
practice to sight-singing which included melodies familiar to them. The melodies on
Mystery Melody Worksheet # I were taught to the students in the months leading up to
the study. The second worksheet, Mystery Melody Worksheet #2, included melodies

from popular music. Students were put into groups and assigned a melody to sight-
read. Through the use of solfege syllables and Curwen hand signs, students were

asked to perfonn the melody and solve the mystery by naming the song their melody
was from. After working on three of the four melodies, students were formally
assessed on the last melody they performed from Mystery Melody Worksheet #2.
Students were more engaged in the sight-singing process when an exercise was
turned into a game using melodies they would know. Students worked together and
practiced together, making their performance much better. Many students were
successful in solving the mystery melody and determining their song title.

I'm uncomfortable with the secret baby thing, especially in CR. But a decent read if you can discount the premise.

The Trouble with Valentine's Day
3.5 Stars

Series Note: This is book #2 in Gospel, Idaho and book #3 in Chinooks Hockey Team. That said, the connection to both of these series is rather superficial in that the setting is Gospel and the hero is a former team member. Consequently, the book can easily be read as a standalone.

The small town setting is charming and the couple is likable enough with solid chemistry. Unfortunately, the book contains several less than enjoyable tropes.

To begin with, Rob's past as a serial womanizer who cheated on his one again/off again wife/girlfriend does not make him the most appealing of heroes. Moreover, he has a daughter with his ex, and even considers getting back together with her, which undermines the romance.

Kate has hang ups of her own particularly when it comes to trusting men and her past experiences as a private investigator are woefully underutilized in the story.

All in all, an entertaining enough read overall, but this is not the best example of Gibson's storytelling skills and it is not recommended to those who are new to her writing.

True Love & Other Disasters
4 Stars

Series note: While this is book #4, it and all the previous books can be read as stand alones as there is no continuous storyline and it is rare for a an earlier character to put in an appearance.

Faith Duffy married for money and is not ashamed to admit it. A former stripper, her elderly husband offered her the safety and security she had always craved, and now that he has passed, she finds herself the reluctant owner of the Chinooks hockey team - the only problem: She knows nothing about hockey.

Team captain Ty Savage is determined to win the Stanley Cup and has not intention of allowing the, the new owner, whom he views as a ditzy blond bimbo, to ruin his chances - the only problem: Whenever they get together, sparks fly.

Faith is a straightforward, honest and likable heroine, and Ty is sexy and caring despite his initially judgmental attitude. The two share some lovely banter and an intense chemistry.

The sports descriptions are, thankfully, kept to a minimum, and the minor plot involving Faith's obnoxious stepson is relatively angst and drama free.

All in all, a light and fun read for lovers of contemporary sports romances.

The Art of Running in Heels
2 Stars

Lexie Kowalsky follows in her mother's footsteps when she narrowly escapes marrying the wrong man, and hitches a ride on a chartered plane carrying non other than the Chinook hockey team's latest recruit, Sean Knox. Like Lexie's father before him, Sean has no intention of getting involved with the blond bombshell, but their undeniable attraction is impossible to resist.

A mediocre ending to a wonderful series as neither the hero nor heroine are particularly appealing, and their romance falls flat.

Lexie's reasons for participating in a Bachelor type reality show are completely illogical, and her frivolous behavior plays into the annoying "dumb blond" stereotype. Moreover, the secondary storyline revolving around Lexie's doggie couture business and her ridiculous Chinese Crested, Yum-Yum (stupid name for a dog), is idiotic and insulting to canines everywhere.

Sean, like most of Gibson's heroes, starts out as an obnoxious, self-absorbed jerk. While his backstory is interesting, there is virtually no growth in his character, and he is just as selfish at the end as in the beginning.

Overall, the impression one gets is that Gibson penned this travesty to appease fans' desire for Lexie's story. Not a good idea.

Daisy's Back in Town
4 Stars

Following the death of her husband, Daisy Monroe returns to Lovett, Texas to reveal a long-held secret. The only problem is that the man she needs to speak to, her former best friend and lover, Jack Parrish, will barely even speak to her. Will Daisy be able to get past his anger to tell him the truth? And once she does, will he ever be able to forgive her?

The second chances romance between Daisy and Jack is excellent and they have an amazing connection both physically and emotionally. Thankfully, the secret-keeping isn't too drawn out although it could have been revealed earlier and with less drama.

The town of Lovett with its quirky residents is delightful, and I look forward to returning with the next book.

Any Man of Mine
4.5 Stars

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Unfortunately, this is not the case for Autumn Haven who, after spending 72 incredible hours with hockey star Sam Leclaire finds herself deserted in a hotel room with a marriage license and a permanent reminder. Now divorced and a single mother, Autumn comes face-to-face with her ex who wants nothing more than to pick up where they left off. Can Autumn find love again with the man who broke her heart?

Like most of Gibson's heroes, Sam is deeply flawed. He initially comes across as a selfish narcissist only interested in his own needs and desires. It quickly becomes clear that there is more to him than meets they eye and that he truly loves his son and wants to be a good father.

Autumn is a strong and courageous heroine, and the fact that she doesn't simply forgive and forget Sam's actions make her even more appealing. Sam has to work hard to win Autumn back and this makes for an even better romance.

The secondary cast are an added bonus. Autumn and Sam's son is just the cutest and Autumn's brother Vince is intriguing. In fact, it appears that he has his own book - Rescue Me, which I will be reading very soon.

All in all a wonderful second chances romance.

Nothing But Trouble
4 Stars

In the aftermath of the accident that cost his career and almost his life, Mark Bressler resents everyone and everything, but highest on his list of annoyances is his newest personal assistant, Chelsea Ross. Pint sized and perky, Chelsea has zero tolerance for the brooding former hockey captain and is determined to earn the huge bonus coming her way for putting up with his nonsense.

Like most of the men in this series, Mark is more than a little bit of a jerk in his treatment of Chelsea. She, on the other hand, is delightful, and her witty comebacks to his obnoxious taunts are hilarious.

Mark and Chelsea have great chemistry and their love scenes are sensual. Their emotional connections isn't as strong however, and it is not really clear why they fall in love. Moreover, the minor conflict toward the end is contrive. Nevertheless, the writing fast paced and Gibson's style is very readable.

All in all, a delightful office type romance.

It Must Be Love
4 Stars

Despite some dated tropes, i.e, the hero smokes "shudder", and the patriarchal portrayal of gender roles, the opposites attract/love-hate relationship is satisfying.

The characters and plot are a mix of Jayne Ann Krentz and Kristen Ashley although the heroine is not as flighty as JAK's and the hero is not as much of an alpha-hole as KA's.

Joe initially comes across as a neanderthal whose preconceived ideas of the perfect woman - cool, calm, composed and willing to be a doormat - are particularly annoying and almost land him in the anti-hottie harem. Nevertheless, his past and close-knit family reveal his protective streak and tremendous capacity for love.

Gabrielle Breedlove, the owner of a new age shop selling essential oils and other knick-knacks, is the complete antithesis of everything Joe wants in a woman. She is open, honest, honest, fanciful and far too naive for her own good. Joe's domineering and condescending attitude makes her blood boil, but she finds herself attracted to him nonetheless.

Joe and Gabrielle's interactions are sweet and sexy, and Joe's groveling at the end more than makeup for his ass-hat behavior.

The minor suspense plot is intriguing although it is obvious from the start that Gabrielle's business partner is a complete crook using her as a legitimate front for his criminal activity.

Overall, an entertaining read that brings to an end my ongoing read of Gibson's backlist. I am very happy that it ended on a high note.

Rescue Me
3.5 Stars

Series note: Book #1 in the Military Men series as well as book #3 in the Lovett, Texas series. This is a direct continuation of book #2 in Lovett, Texas although much of the story takes place on the road.

An entertaining romance although the on-the-run plot could have been better developed.

Stella and Beau's opposites attract romance is fun, and the road-trip trope provides a good backdrop for it. She is cute, adorable and looking for "the one" while he is stoic and broody with commitment issues. They have great chemistry and the conflict at the end is believable and well-established by their individual backstories.

Nevertheless, Gibson lays the basic foundation for an intense and suspenseful chase scenario involving the Russian mafia that never fully materializes, which is disappointing.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read recommended for fans of Rachel Gibson, but there are better books for readers new to her works, such as Sex, Lies and Online Dating or Simply Irresistible.

Rescue Me
4 Stars

Series note: This is book #2 in the Lovett, Texas series. It takes place 8 years following the previous installment, and aside from a couple of minor references to the characters, there is no other connection. That said, this book is also related to the Chinooks Hockey Team series. The hero, Vince Haven, is the older brother of the heroine in Any Man of Mine. While it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the Chinooks book first. It one of my favorites in that series.

On to the review . . .

Rachel Gibson's writing is exceedingly engaging, and the quirky town of Lovett with its oddball residents and their crazy shenanigans makes for very entertaining reading.

Sadie and Vince's romance steams up the pages. While it is obvious from the start that their "no strings attached" relationship will develop into something more, it is fun going along with the ride as these two emotionally challenged people realize that their feelings for one another are more intense than expected.

My only issue, as indicated by other reviewers, is that the ending is somewhat abrupt and the book is in dire need of an epilogue.

In sum, highly recommended for lovers of small-town romances, snarky heroines and sexy former Navy SEALs.

Just Kiss Me
4 Stars

As the housekeeper's daughter, Vivien Leigh Rochet grew up in the shadow of the wealthy Whitley-Shuler family. After leaving for Hollywood and becoming a famous actress, Vivien returns to Charleston upon the death of her mother and learns that while some things never change, others actually do ... namely Henry Whitley-Shuler. The boy she once loved to hate has become a man she cannot get out of her mind or her heart.

To begin with, Vivien is a heroine that one either loves or hates. She initially comes across as spoiled and irritating, but she does eventually mature and ended up growing on me. Henry on the other hand is an incredible hero - gorgeous, caring and loyal to a fault. He and Vivien have intense chemistry and their banter is one of the highlights of the book.

That said, the conflict that develops between them toward the end of the book is annoyingly contrived and could have been easily resolved if Henry and Vivien had actually listened to one another rather than jumping to conclusions.

Gibson's writing is delightful and she captures the whimsical charm of Charleston as well as the pretentious and artificial Hollywood lifestyle perfectly. The snippets from Vivien's childhood diary are wonderful and provide essential insight into her character.

The twists and revelations in the storyline and characterization are quite obvious, but this is a romance not a mystery, so that is to be expected.

All in all, a lovely romance as always from Gibson.

At first I had this at 4 stars, but then I thought about things and reassessed and bumped it down to 3 stars. There were some things that I just didn't like to much about the "hero". Most of all was the way he acted with Adele. From their first few meetings, I was under the impression that Adele just up and left him alone and confused. Because that's exactly how he acted . . . confused that she disappeared on him. But then, it comes to light that he knew exactly what was going on at the time: his ex-girlfriend ends up pregnant and he decides to marry her. So I'm confused as to why he would think Adele would have wanted to stick around and what would make him believe she'd be happy to see him again. It was all about him and how Devon got pregnant to trap him in a loveless marriage. I was disappointed that he never realized how much he hurt Adele in the past and attempted to make amends. Instead, due to Ghost Devon's machinations, he ends up in a similar situation, blames Adele for trapping him into a marriage she never claims to want with him, and once again makes her feel like worthless trash. Mix that in with all the Devon trying to get to Heaven stuff, and it takes a lot from the book.

However, I enjoyed Adele and I loved reading her story. I would have liked more interaction with her friends from the first three books, though. And I would have liked a more substantial reason for Tiffany accepting Adele at the end. But for the most part, the book was pretty good and though rushed, the ending was happy.

I liked it. Not quite as much as the first, but a little better than the second. I liked the drama involved in the relationship with these two. But the ending was a bit lacking. There seemed to be a lot left unsaid. Does Maddie publish the book? Does Mick like the book? Is Mick's sister really crazy or just needing the love of a good man? Do Maddie and Mick stay in Truly?
