With the 2012 election just about begun this is a useful book to look back on. It is a book primarily about mudslinging and how it affects the outcome of an election rather than real issues. The experienced authors tell the story well. We can expect a similar book 3 years from now about the next presidential election. Interesting read.

Excellent, on point! As someone who worked in the political campaign world in the 80's, I find Germond insightfully hits the game playing, anything to win philosophy of our political system. Well-written, humorous too, from a man who has experienced and witnessed the system for many years.½

Two veteran political columnists, Witcover and Germond, provide intriguing information on the strategists and politicians who masterminded the 1980 election campaigns. The authors argue that uncontrollable and unforeseeable events rather than issues determined the victor of this election. The authors include coverage on the campaigns of Teddy Kennedy, Howard Baker, Robert Dole and John Anderson. I recommend this book for its seemingly unbiased look. A must for any interested in U.S. Presidential Campaigns.½
