William H. Gerdts was born in 1929 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Amherst College and a master's degree and PhD in fine arts from Harvard University. He has served as curator of art at the Norfolk (Virginia) Museum and resident director of the historic Myers mostra altro House in Norfolk, as curator of painting and sculpture at the Newark (New Jersey) Museum, and as gallery director at the University of Maryland (College Park), where he also taught art history. He is an art historian and professor of art history at CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author of 25 books on American art including Art Across America. Twelve American masterpieces di William H. Gerdts

Twelve artists are featured in this gallery catalog. I was familiar with several of them, Thomas Cole, Thomas Eakins, Frederick Remington, but the one I turned to first was the marine painter Fitz Hugh Lane, The painting, "A Storm, Breaking Away: Vessel slipping her cable" The reviewer was extremely knowledgeable in the subject and through his analysis I learned how little I know about seamanship.
I will read some of the reviews of the artists I don't care much about, Maybe I will learn why other people like them.… (altro)

Ten American Painters di William H. Gerdts

Exhibition catalog from 1990, this is an enormously welcome addition to the literature on American Impressionism. I have long searched for one biography (if you will) on this group, as they formed their own loosely organized society to exhibit annually. Wonderfully written essays by ten different scholars on each of The Ten artists, this work collects them as a whole and individually, with a well-written introductory history by Gerdts. An outstanding work in total, it is the sum of its parts.
