My review is for a first edition paperback version of the book that is signed by the author.
Warning: there are incidents explained in the book that involves animal cruelty, animals being hurt, sacrificed in a ritualistic way so don't read the book if you're not okay with that.
In my opinion it doesn't help that any newspaper that existed in the 1960's & 1970's that was reporting the news of any incident involving the occult was sensationalised to gain more attention.
This has contributed to locals teenagers in the Clophill village & surrounding areas that are aware of the incidents involving the occult & they are fascinated, obsessed with witchcraft to want to go to the St. Mary's church ruins to see what all the fuse was about.
However not everyone has good intentions though and they don't respect the dead/the privacy of family members that are buried in the cemetery.
People that live in the village, don't want negative publicity due to the connection to black magick, gave robbery, grave desecrations, animal cruelty or animal abuse, various covens that were practicing different types of witchcraft, at the time when the occult/Satanic themed crimes occurred.
Only the graves of women were disinterred, toe bones were stolen, some were used for necromantic rituals, as a offering to the Deity, demon, being the coven believed in and worshipped.
A skull of a woman was placed on a spike, the bones of the arms or legs were crossed, a cockerel was sacrificed, celtic crosses were used.
I don't understand the significance of one the covens rituals that involved a female clay effigy, hawthorn thorns, this is related to a female Deity Diana, but I don't understand why one of them was found outside of Sandringham Palace.
The bones of one specific grave of a woman were disinterred several times, rituals were performed on a full moon, the human bones used were symbolic since it was too cold to used a symbolic living altar of a woman that was alive, so the bones of a woman were from a grave were used as a substitute.
There is a interesting rumour that thee is a unmarked grave of a well-known Satanist buried in the St. Mary's churchyard which could be Aleister Crowley (Occultist/black magick practitioner & a Satanist)
Some of the covens were practicing black magick, necromancy, there was at least one Wiccan coven mentioned that Gerald Garner was a part of until people interfered with their beliefs/practices due to unjustified fear & hatred, intolerance of the coven.
Wicca is not evil, they respect and worship Gaia (mother nature) and other Gods & Goddesses that are Celtic, Pagan or Druid in origin (British, Irish, Scottish, Wesh)
Witchcraft represents the elements & cycles of nature (birth, death, rebirth, renewal and earth, air, fire, water, spirit or it's sometimes known as ether)
More than one coven was practising black magick, at least one coven was a Satanic coven, some people that desecrated tombstones or cemetery statues were probably a devil worshipper (they think it is aesthetically cool/edgy to summon demons, or learn about black magick to harm innocent people on purpose) which is totally different to being a Satanist. (atheists, that don't believe Satan or Lucifer are a real, interdimensional, celestial, ancient, primordial, demonic entities/beings.
They wouldn't believe in spirituality, anyone that is psychic, a medium, empath, they don't believe in mythology, folklore, lore/legends/myths.
i'm curious what people believe in if they are a Satanic witch)
I genuinely believe that some of the covens were practicing black magick/witchcraft, a minority of people destroyed tombstones, or showed up at the St. Mary's churchyard due to curiosity, people destroyed tombstones for attention and due to them being disrespectful to the dead.
It's always been fascinating, creepy and disturbing to me, since I live in England and this happened in a village, called Clophill, Bedfordshire.
