If the Vietnam War was the first war to be televised, than the Civil War was the first one to be photographed. And Matthew Brady and his assistants were the ones who brought the realities of 19th century warfare home to United States citizens. "Brady's Civil War: A Collection of Memorable Civil War Images" merely scratches the surface of the vast collection of photographs taken by Brady and his assistants. This book contains many ones that I know well and a few that I consider personal favorites, as well as photos of people who's names have been lost to the ravages of time, along side those of more famous people. All in all, an excellent reference book filled with arresting images that startle and move viewers across the years.

A very long glossary of 600 mostly out-dated words and phrases. It is appropriate that the cover is decorated with gay (happy, not homosexual) nineties (1890s not 1990s) silhouettes. Some of these (moron, shindig, bootlick, bulldozer, fly off the handle) have somewhat interesting origins. Some (boner, flash in the pan, lay an egg) are certainly obsolete. Perhaps this is a good compliment to something like the Urban Dictionary.½

I have one word to describe this book. Yawn. Not what I expected at all. I thought it would be fun stories, folk lore, legends, etc. Nope, the majority of the book was about the civil war, different men that partook in different battles.

This is a collection of folklore, tale, legends, and true events from North and South Carolina. Stories about the Wright Brothers, the Siamese Twins, Blackbeard, Dorothea Dix, Osceola, Tsali, and other Cherokees, among others, are topics of stories and legends in this book of tales.

Don't know why i didn't realize this but it is 150 little informational paragraphs. some things i thought were so great i wondered why i hadn't heard it before.. some things very interesting. it would make a good calander with a differ saying every day kind of thing. sitting down to read them all at once i would say you might wanna have an interest in the subjuct or political oddities type of thing.

A very interesting look at the first ladies from Martha Washington to Rosalynn Carter covering everything from redecorating the White House and purchasing formal china to raising their children and weddings held in the White House.

A couple of my favorite First Ladies were Jackie Kennedy who had a great part in the remodeling of the White House establishing the Red, Green and Blue rooms and of course her courage upon the death of her husband John and Betty Ford who did so much to bring attention to the treatment for substance abuse and showed a strong spirit and unwavering loyalty.

I have always held a fascination with the Civil War, so when I was offered the chance to review this book, I simply jumped at it! And I wasn't disappointed!

Garrison feeds us tidbits, facts, and fun stories of the Civil War as if they were bon bons to be enjoyed and savored!

At first glance, I thought to myself, I will have to read this one fact at a time and set it aside or I will soon be overwhelmed with facts and figures! However, Garrison leads us through a myriad tunnel of information, much as though we were walking through a fine art gallery, allowing us to stop and view each work and allow it to stand on its own merit before we procede further.

The front cover states "Strange Stories, Infamous Characters, & Bizarre Events". It doesn't disappoint!

If you're not into history, or the Civil War, you might want to skip over this one. But if you are... then you'll probably devour it as greedily as I did!

I give this one five stars and my thumbs up award!

****DISCLOSURE: This book was offered free for review from BookSneeze, a division of Thomas Nelson Publishing.

An exceptionally good collection of records/references of events and happenings leading to instances of friendly fire during the American Civil war. Tragedies and dark humor abound.½

This aberrant book is a wonderful addition to any civil war library, and a fascinating read to any trivia master. The stories are short, almost all a paragraph or two, to the point, and divided by category. The author compiled a lot of know and unknown facts about the men and women who fought, and lived through this trying time in American history

I learned so much from this book. It's informative, easy to read, and even funny at times! Great if you're just picking something up to pass the time. I'll admit I still haven't read the entire thing...it's a bit long. Still worth it.½
