Thesis: String methods have included rote teaching for over fifty years with great
success. However, rote teaching is not an approach commonly practiced in band methods.
Most beginning band teachers jump immediately from the first sounds of tone production
to note reading. It is not incorporated into the standard curriculum in most cases and if
used at all, is most commonly used in the form of "singing the part" for immediate
imitation by the student rather than teaching the necessary skills for a student to perform
the music on their own. Although this approach is not a good example of rote teaching,
some of the ideas presented in Suzuki's rote-based teaching method are educationally
sound and should be considered a viable approach in band methodology.… (altro)
