Among the individuals covered are Lincoln, Grant Lee, Sherman, Clara Barton, George Custer, Frederick Douglass and George Pickett. Each merits a lengthy write-up illustrated with photographs of artifacts - a family photograph, letters, jewelry, clothing, etc. - connected to that person. The book thus offers a rare, compelling glimpse into the person behind the legend.
