INTRODUCTION

It's report card time and as the music teacher you find yourself assessing SOO
students. You think to yourself, "Susan is such a nice girl, she deserves a P (performing
at expectation) and Eric, no Eric is always fooling around. He deserves a G (goal for
improvement)." Now at conferences Eric's parents come to visit you. It is a rare
occurrence but it does happen. Eric's parents want to know why their child is not doing
well in music. You fumble with your words and give a few examples of the poor
behavior but make sure to end the explanation with a positive, "But I look forward to
seeing him grow to his potential this spring!" After the day of conferences there is little
