Absolutely great story and steeped in the time and places it is set in, language and all. Humour without whimsy and rather dark. Just brilliant. I twigged early on where Springwell really is, but I was delighted to be completely surprised by the last twist in the tail!
Even better the second time, especially as I had completely forgotten what the last twist could be! Upgrading to 5 stars. The different voices are well handled but the main voice - Corney Sage - comes across as such a complex living person that by then my emotions were invested heavily and I was completely taken up by the last feverish, dreamy, rushing passages.
Obviously I know Springwell/Matlock Bath but I'm guessing Abbotswelford is Abbots Langley. Burdon Oaks is more of a puzzle.... Church Stretton? and New Clay I like to think is Clay Cross. Anyway LOVE it.… (altro)
