A gorgeous book, with beautiful illustrations. The devotion to Mary deserves a wide sweep of a book, even though there is a Roman Catholic bent. The collection of art pictured in these pages is tremendous.½

From the Alamo and Gettysburg to Mount Rushmore and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Monuments is celebrated architectural historian Judith Dupré’s sweeping tribute to classic American landmarks. It features more than 200 stunning duotone photographs, as well as fascinating stories, rare illustrations, candid interviews with artists and architects, and a unique chronology of milestones in the history of time and memory.

Ono or 2 page description of some of the world's most famous skyscrapers. Written in 1996. At that time the Petronas towers in Malaysia were the tallest.

This was a interesting folk tale about a beautiful mouse. The father and mother knew how beautiful their daughter was and wanted to find a powerful man to marry their daughter. The try asking the sun, moon, wind, and the great big wall, but its not them that will marry their daughter. When they return home there is a handsome mouse waiting to marry their daughter. Everyone joins them for the ceremony as all the mice gather around to celebrate. I really enjoyed reading this folk tale. The illustrations were beautiful and made the story even better for me.

Beautiful folk tale!!! A couple of mice want to find the perfect husband for her loved and prefect mouse daughter. Advised by the Moon, they seek the powerful Sun to marry their daughter. The sun tells them that the most powerful y the Cloud, the Cloud tells them it's the Wind and the wind tells the Mice although he is powerful, Wind is not as strong as the Wall. They run to the wall of a temple sure they have found the perfect husband.
To everyone's surprise, the Wall confesses he crumbles when he sees a mouse. A mouse!! In the the end there's a beautiful mice wedding in front of the Temple with everyone dancing, surrounded by the Sun, The cloud crying of happiness and the Wind keeping everyone cool.

Although I didn't see anything in the story that reflected Mayan culture, I loved the plot of the tale. So sweet!

This is a very stunning book on One World Trade Center in New York City. The illustrations and photography are absolutely beautiful. It contains a construction timeline, some materials used, info on Two World Trade center, info on the 9/11 memorial, and a tour inside.

Content, photos, and illustrations. 5*****

This is a remarkable paean to the building of the One World Trade Center. This book celebrates in pictures aand prose the considerable effort to make this building come about. Although it evades any look at the status or role of nearby buildings like the Deutsche Bank or St. Paul' Chapel, it is well worth reading.

How difficult it is to experience this book now, that was meant as a tower of hope, a monument to the urban sophistication of the twentieth century. It's an appropriately tall book, over eighteen inches.and slim, about eight inches. It's black-and-white photographs (a full-page one for each skyscraper), its use of bold blacks, trim silvery print, and half-tones are a visual tribute to the steel height and efficiency of the buildings. Like an elevator, one's eye automatically rises from the first floors of the majestic photographs and then descend slowly down the print (and small illustrations) on the opposite page. The book is - or was intended to be - awesome. One subtle touch of the modernism it embodies is captured in the amusingly ironice names of the publisher and designer: Black Dog & Leventhal and Alleycat, respectively.

From the soaring Chrysler Building on the cover, the foggy skyline on the front endpaper, the half-tone of an upward gaze at the Flatiron building behind the table of contents, through a procession of fifty of the world's best-known skyscrapers to the tall silver and black of the back cover, one is almost overwhelmed by the massiveness and magnificent of these achievements in architecture. A page of historical notes and data for each entry provides the information one needs to trace the history of the art form. On the bottom right corner of each entry, small silhouettes compare the height of the building under consideration with that of the Sears Tower, the Empire State Building, and the Eiffel Tower. The chronology is divided into five sections: Ancient Roots (beginning with the Washington Monument), The Growth of New York City, Materials and Technology, Towers, and Visionary Cities. One cannot help leafing through the whole books, spotting all fifty in order before one returns to the text and the details.

But then here it is - right after the John Hancock Center in Chicago and the Trans-america Pyramid in San Francisco , just before the Sears Tower in Chicago and the John Hancock Tower in Boston, in the middle of the section modestly call Materials and Technology, there it stands again. Frankly, in this context, it looks rather plain, squarish in the cluttered landscape at its foot, not gleaming like John Hancock, not ornate like the Transamerica. The twin towers of the World Trade Center simply seem efficient, practical, quite safe. Looking at this page now, more than a decade after 9/11, one can only grieve.

And suddenly the whole book appears in a new perspective. Maybe a nostalgic look back on the

This graphic novel was originally published in 1998 by Vertigo and is to be re-released in hardcover on 05th August 2014.

Sandra meets Victor (Frankenstein), whilst bar-tending at an art exhibition and immediately invites him to her off Broadway show, she is also a part time actress. It is inevitable that Sandra is going to fall head over heels for the mysterious stranger.

There is no horror here at all and I struggled to find a story. I found Sandra's character too insipid and Victor was barely a character at all.

The art style reminded me of the photo stories that were quite popular in teen magazines in the 80's, and that extremely popular a-ha video, you know the one, photos mixed with paint & charcoal drawings, mixed media.

I did not like the art at all in this graphic novel, and I am not certain that I would have liked it sixteen* years ago either, on the whole it just wasn't for me, on top of which I found the story to be tedious and melodramatic. If this novel was critically acclaimed several decades ago, I am not certain that it has withstood the passage of time.

* The edition published by Vertigo in 1998 is the only other edition I could find, I assume as 2014 is the 20th anniversary that there is another.

I received an ARC from the publishers for an honest review.

This Mayan folk tale teaches about, "the circular ways of nature". What a great story to include in a unit about different cultures. After all of their searching, turns out that a mouse was the prefect companion for their daughter.

It's not so much the book as the format. Tall and short. But it is beautiful. If you like architecture, engineering, or design, you need this book.

beautiful book. Great gift. Like all of Dupre's books the format is outstanding showing much imagination and thought about how to best present the material it covers. This one opens like a church door revealing, like all of her books, wonderful pictures of all the buildings presented. She does not confine her efforts to the western world and temples and mosques are also presented as places of worship.
