The sexting and the coke were already a problem before he got caught by Betty when she came home with the kids. The drugs on the coffee table and the messages on the phone were dead giveaways even if Betty had not noticed his glassy eyes. She noticed and she was not happy. He could explain it all, but that would definitely make things worse, so he didn’t try to stop her from taking the boys and leaving.

Thanks to his principal, he has a plan to fix everything. A great plan. Quite possibly the best plan ever. He just needs to get some stuff, including some more coke, and get a little help from a friend or two.

If you have read any of the short fiction penned by author C. S. DeWildt, you know things tend to go very dark quickly. Such is the case here with A Not Good Teacher: A Short Story. Every step he takes, every move he makes, just makes things worse. Some of that is funny, but overall this is a dark tale of futility. The only real question is just how bad things will ultimately get in this noir style tale.

If you have read any of author CS DeWildt’s work, you know that there will be dark times and maybe some humor. No humor is present all in his short story, Corbin’s Dreams Take Flight: A Short Story. There is plenty of darkness and pain.

Corbin Rutherford Scaggs broke his wrist when he fell of the roof of the single wide trailer he shared with his mom and his older brother, Tommy. That break resulted in five pins and a titanium plate by way of a surgeon who also wrote him a script for Percocet. His brother took off again and this time took Corbin’s pain meds. If he had just left a few days earlier, Corbin never would have been on the roof in the first place and therefore the fall would never have happened. He waited a month before moving into Tommy’s old bedroom.

Part of that move requires Corbin washing the sheets for the bed. That process is interrupted by Janie Myers inviting him outside to see what is going on. The Davis brothers are, like the up and coming sociopaths they are, torturing a small create. In this case, a pigeon that is now permanently blind and missing a beak among other numerous injuries.

A brutalized pigeon that Corbin intends to save in Corbin’s Dreams Take Flight. The steps he takes and how that is accomplished is the focus in a dark tale that does not end in the way one would expect. It is also a very disturbing one.

Corbin’s Dreams Take Flight is certainly not for everyone. Especially if violence against animals and birds bother you as the bird has a very hard go of it before and after the rescue by Corbin. Well written, this is not a tale that makes you feel good about anyone. Unlike his recently published short story, The Louisville Problem, there is no mystery at work here. Other than how do folks end up like this as adults are not present and are only vaguely referred to a couple of times. Once could make an argument that this tale has links to the Lord of the Flies albeit on a much smaller scale.

A slice of life style piece set across a few weeks, Corbin’s Dreams Take Flight: A Short Story is one of the toughest things I have read in a very long time. While it may be only thirteen pages long, this is a tale that hits with the power of a sledgehammer upside the head.

Jasper Skaggs came to the isolated place to reinvent himself and settle scores from the past. Grover Shutes said too much once too many times making it clear he did not respect Jasper. Now Grover is bleeding out in the woods somewhere and Jasper Skaggs now has a new issue.

How to deal with the wife of Grover Shutes as well as his fifteen year old daughter? Jasper has been intimate with both of them, on more than one occasion, and could just move into the house and take over if he wanted to as he is sure the body in the woods would never be found. That would be possible in a perfect world and Jasper is well aware that this is certainly not a perfect world. Moving into the house, staying clear of any murder changes if the body was ever found, and keeping up relations with both of females without either one figuring it out would be fairly difficult. It would get complicated. He could just kill them both and move on though that option really isn’t one. How to move things forward without them knowing he killed Grover is one of several issues he has to deal with in The Louisville Problem: A Short Story.

If you have read his crime fiction novel, Suburban Dick, you already know that author CS DeWildt writes twisted tales of dark people and events with an occasional dash of humor. Such is the case here with The Louisville Problem: A Short Story. Jasper Skaggs has decided to do what makes him happy and killing Grover Shute was just a small step in his somewhat vague long range plan. His plan was not fully conceived before he started, it he loves it as it gradually comes together.

This is not a read for everyone. This is a crime fiction read with adult language and other factors that won’t work for all readers. Clearly, the fact that the story makes no secret that Jasper is having sexual relations with a minor will be a red flag for some. It is certainly implied that Jasper is not her first, but at the same time, at fifteen she should not be with anyone for any reason. While the situation is not one of graphic detail, the fact that it is present at all will upset some readers.

That being said, The Louisville Problem: A Short Story is a good one. Like Suburban Dick, this short story is not for everyone.

Gus Harris is a private detective who is living the classic private detective lifestyle. Dead broke, recently divorced and very unhappy, he is struggling to keep his business afloat, not beat up his wife’s new boyfriend (even though the guy clearly needs a good beating), and stay in his kids life. It is a lot to handle. Then he gets a case in his small office above Hostetter’s Vacuum Repair. You might tend to be cranky all the time as well if you listened to the noise from vacuum cleaners screaming all day.

Gene and Grace Hughes are his latest clients and when they start explaining why they are in his office, Gus starts remembering the news coverage. Their son is missing. He was best friends with Drew Davis. The same Drew Davis who recently committed suicide by jumping off the pedestrian bridge in the Horton Nature Preserve. His death sparked a wave of stories about teenage suicides in both the local and national news outlets. Both boys were on the high school wrestling team. Not only were Gus and now his ex-wife Lucy alumni of Horton High, their teenage daughter, Jessie, goes to school and there and has a part in an upcoming school play. So, the story hit home for Gus in more than one way.

Albie Hughes is wanted for questioning in the Drew Davis suicide case by the local police. The more Gus interviews the parents, the more he is convinced there is a lot they are not telling him. Something is definitely wrong with what they say and it isn’t just the obvious marital discord between the missing son’s parents. Thanks to the parents and the info they did share, Gus has two leads with the first being the Horton High Wrestling Coach, Geoff Hanson. He took in Albie weeks ago to help and then made sure to cutoff contact between the boy and his parents among other things. That coach is definitely a place to start on the search.

What follows is a complex crime tale that easily could be happening anywhere these days. Author CS DeWildt keeps the tale moving at a steady pace. While Gus hits all the stereotype cliché boxes (broke, divorced, affair with his far younger assistant, etc.) with his character, the author breathes new life into those clichés and spins them in a tale that works at all levels. Crime fiction with a hint of noir and good old fashioned mystery with the occasional flash of dark humor, Suburban Dick: A Novel is a novel is a good one and well worth your time. And, yes, the title has more than one meaning and, no, I am not telling you.
