Originally conceived for an exhibition in Afghanistan, Tacita Dean’s (born 1965) c/o Jolyon consists of 100 original prewar postcards from Kassel, Germany, over which the artist painted contemporary views of the same sites in gouache. The postcards were originally mailed "c/o Jolyon" to the former CEO of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Kabul, Jolyon Leslie. The name Jolyon had a particular resonance for Dean, as it was her father’s middle name, taken from a character in John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga. The first 50 postcards of c/o Jolyon were shown as part of Documenta 13 at the Queen’s Palace, Bagh-e Babur in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2012. Published in a limited edition of 300 copies, this book reproduces the 100 postcards in full color.… (altro)

Tacita Dean's work explores the multiple semiosis that arise between what we see and what we hear. According to the artist, the soundtrack of a video can be used to narrate or simply to announce, interpret or reinforce the meaning of a given sequence. Indeed, a lack of sound can determine how an image is read. This catalogue, which accompanied an exhibition encompassing films, sounds works, drawings, texts and photographs, shows the importance of chance, loss and coincidence in the work of the artist.… (altro)

Has quickly established itself alongside Lippard's 'Lure of the Local' and Kwon's 'One Place After Another' as an essential introduction to the subject of place in contemporary fine art. Highly recommended.
