This is a well-researched book, written by an attorney, from "the standpoint of those who lived in the [Johnson] county." (xiii) In addition to leaning about a tragic period 1891-1892 in Wyoming history, readers will likely learn much about the people and politics of Wyoming in its earliest years as a state.

The book includes numerous photos of people and places, as well as a map of north-central Wyoming, which includes Johnson County. An excellent bibliography is included, as is a helpful index.

One of my reasons for reading the book is that an early victim of the Johnson County War, Nate Champion (1857-1892), was a nephew of Benjamin F. Standifer [or Standefer] (1838-1874), an evangelist of the Christian Church, who also died in an act of violence by one using a gun. Nate's brother, Rufus Dudley Champion (1859-1893) was shot to death in May 1893, and is considered to be "the last death associated with the Johnson County War." (270)… (altro)
