4. Each poem has 1-2 small illustrations that relate to the text
5. Activity idea: Each student can choose a poem to read from this collection, rehearse it, and then perform it in front of the class to show that each students' voice has power

A great story of how someone can take the death of a relative and make it positive. I think this would be a great book to read to students who are struggling with the death of someone they are close to and ask them to reflect on how they can highlight the good memories they have with that person. A great book about emotion and growth.

There are a lot of books out there for children with painful prose that are awkward to read. This is not one of them. Masterful use of language.

The plot is great too - so dark! Read aloud to my 5 yo and she loved it.

Recommended by L's friend Maya G.

Luna loves art, and is excited about her class trip to an art museum, which her mom is chaperoning. But her classmate Finn seems unhappy; when he sees a sculpture called "family," he objects, "Families don't look like that." Luna's mom kneels down next to Finn and explains, "Some families look like that, some do not...there are lots of different families like all this different art."

Endpapers show the illustrator's rendition of famous artworks (Mondrian, Cezanne, Matisse, Manet, Pollock, van Gogh, Kusama, Malevich, Hirst, Bourgeois, Koons, Warhol, Bonnard, Moore).

Poems Aloud is exactly what it sounds like. Pages of cute poems for children written alongside wonderful little illustrations. It is a great book to refer back to time and time again since you do not have to read it all at once. It also includes riddles and tongue twisters. This book would be great in an art classroom or an English classroom. Poetry is something that students of all ages learn and practice. I would recommend this to my fellow English teachers.

British poet and playwright Joseph Coelho and Australian illustrator Allison Colpoys join forces in this poignant picture-book about a young child's loving relationship with her grandfather, and her grief and sense of loss, when he dies. Frequently together, grandfather and granddaughter find something to do, no matter the season. From walking in the park to repairing and playing with a toy racetrack, they have plenty of fun together, and create many memories. When the grandfather is gone, the girl must gather those memories together, recalling her lost relative with love...

Originally published in the UK as If All the World Were..., and then republished here in the states as Grandpa's Stories, this is a book I sought out largely for the illustrations, having enjoyed Colpoys' artwork on two earlier titles from author Davina Bell (Captain Starfish and All the Ways to be Smart). I see that this team, Coelho and Colpoys, have a second title coming out later this year (2021), entitled My Beautiful Voice, which I hope to track down as well. In any case, I was certainly not disappointed in the visuals here, which are delightful, featuring a gorgeous color palette and beautifully stylized figures. I particularly liked the scenes in which the girl imagines that all the world is like this or that - dreams, deep space, stories - as the perspective there seems to draw back, showing the girl in her own imaginative world. The story here is poignant, and addresses a common childhood experience - the loss of a grandparent - with sensitivity and compassion. I wasn't thrilled with the grandfather's remark at the beginning of the book that the little girl is too old to hold hands - is one every too old for such a thing? - but it didn't ruin the story for me, as I interpreted it as him just being a little bit crusty. It's clear, from the rest of the tale, that he loves his granddaughter very much, and is devoted to her happiness. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for stories addressing the loss of a grandparent, as well as to fellow admirers of Allison Colpoys' work.

Coelho's slim volume of twelve seasonal poems, one for each month of the year, is a tribute to nature and a childhood spent exploring the outdoors. I selected this children's book to fulfill the 'a book of nature poems' category in the Read Harder challenge this year. As someone who regretfully fails at poetry appreciation in general, it is challenging for me to comment on the quality of verse, but a number of them gave me cozy feelings and inspired a desire to spend more time outdoors. Extra points for Judd's gorgeous illustrations.

At first, I didn’t like this book. Then, it grew on me just a little. I feel like this book would be very useful in an elementary school classroom because grandparents (or great-grandparents) dying are things a child may go through at this age. Elderly family members passing are frequently the first experience children have with death. It can be hard for anyone, especially a child to deal with death. Overall, I wasn’t that interested in the book and I think there are better books out there that would fill the purpose that this book holds.

The first half of the book is about a young girl and the time she spends with her grandfather. On each page they enjoy one of four seasons of the year with different explorations and activities. The second half is about how she copes after he passes away. "Grandpa's Stories" is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. This book is perfect for both children and adults who have lost someone. The little girl misses her grandfather dearly but she remains as positive as she can while keeping the memory of him alive in her heart and journal. Also, I was absolutely blown away by the illustrations in this book, they are by far my favorite I've seen in all the picture books I've read.

A little girl shares the memories of fun times spent with her grandfather. After the grandfather passes, the child uses the handmade book he left for her to draw and write about new experiences they could have together. The brightly colored illustrations and simple gentle text will sooth readers as they follow the young girl on her explorations with her grandfather. This book may work well for children experiencing grief at the loss of a close family member. Grandpa's Stories is worth adding to a home library and making it accessible to everyone through the public library, as well. Read. Be soothed. share.

Joseph Coehlo and Allison Colpoys manage a bittersweet tale of the relationship between a little girl and her grandfather and a celebration of life amidst loss. My favorite page is in the middle of the book, where the two of the them are surrounded by the stars and the text says "If all the world were deep space, I'd orbit my grandpa like the moon, and our laughs would be shooting stars". The use of pastels invokes the soft and sweet relationship and complements the text by Coehlo.

This book was especially moving to our family having lost my husband and my grandchildren's grandfather less than two years ago. This book depicts a young girl's love for her granddad and how they spend time together, her wishing it would never end. When he dies, she copes with the situation and uses a notebook he made for her to write and draw her memories while dealing with her grief. The book is written by poet and playwright Joe Coelho with wonderful illustrations by Allison Colpoys. This is a wonderful book that tackles a touchy topic: death. Death is never easy but this book would be a great help to any child. A wonderful addition to a family library where they will eventually have to deal with death and the grief that comes with it. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

If All the World Were... by Joseph Coelho is a poignant tale about a young girl facing the death of her grandfather. Told through lyrical prose and gorgeous artwork, we see her favourite memories of being with her grandfather, expressed through seasonal imagery. I'm going to be honest. This book brought tears to my eyes. It was my paternal grandmother who I was closest to in all my family. When she passed, it devastated me. I'm thankful for all the time I had with her. I read this with my cubs, which led to discussions regarding death. As a concept, it's not foreign to them. We've had furbabies pass. But this seems to have brought the full realisation that I or Jonas, or others in the family, won't always be around.

***Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This was a nice book about a granddaughter's love for her grandpa. It was sad and definitely a lot of people can relate to. I was once like the girl. I had a grandpa who I loved so much but nothing can bring my grandpa physically back. Although it is sad, it is nice to see the girl's memories of her grandpa. The ending was definitely a surprise. It is worth the read with your son and/or daughter. I do hope I can get a physical copy.

Thanks #NetGalley for the free copy.
