Michael Charry

Sometimes I wonder about myself. A man has written a perfectly fine biography of a famous conductor: thorough, conscientious, lucid, level-headed, nicely structured, detailed, but not stuffed with tedium. There's even a comprehensive discography and an excellent index. And yet, I only award 3 stars. Why in the world haven't I been more charitable? I suppose because this book is just plain bland, something Szell himself never was.
