This is a classic piece of Victorian Melodrama. I read it, as it features Valentine Greatrakes, and I wanted to add it to my Greatrakes collection.

Absolutely abysmal, so bad that I was surprised to see Carleton was a best-selling Irish author of his day. It's the story of a family feud in 17th century Ireland and is full of supernatural goings-on; ruined maidens, repenting on their deathbeds; and forelock tugging locals.
