This was an okay book, if rather forgettable. I feel like the goal was a sort of old-school hardboiled detective novel in a more supernatural setting... but the main character didn't read as true as I would have liked. The mother angle, in particular, seemed forced.

I don't think I would especially seek out a sequel-- and it very much read like it was setting up a sequel. It's in the category of books I'd read as an library ebook if I couldn't find something I particularly wanted to read, but wouldn't seek out as a hard copy or as something for which I paid. I've definitely read worse, but-- it's kind of middling.… (altro)

The Demons of Wall Street by Laurence Raphel Brothers was okay. I don't care for heroines that are so snarky and difficult they don't have any friends. The love, at first sight, was rather cliched. The Love interest was not very well characterized. It was a fast read, but I doubt I'd continue with the series.

The premise of this novel sounds really good, but the execution is lacking.

I really didn’t like the main character, she was snarky and cursed a lot, not that I’m a prude or anything, but I think adding the f-bomb sometimes takes away from the flow of the writing and doesn’t really add anything to the novel itself. I didn’t like the writing style itself, I dislike it when books describe EVERY single action a character makes, but it wasn’t terrible, just decent. In the middle of the book, the main character started changing, and since I didn’t like her personality at first I was kind of excited to see her arc. But, when the time did come, it felt very rushed and as if the mc had been replaced altogether rather than her changing. She transitioned way too fast (into practically another person at that) without any actual development that showed her progress (except her being quiet at times & conversations that came too soon).

I skimmed some of this book, not a lot, but some of the descriptions were unnecessary. I just did not enjoy the descriptions. I love flowery writing, but this was not that, it was more of describing the character’s EVERY action.

The character felt much younger than their age and not mature whatsoever which I really despise in novels. Without the “adult” parts I’d assume this book is about a 16 year old honestly, because the voice seemed very young and immature.

The romance felt completely unnecessary, it was a huge case of insta-love. I’m not going to spoil anything, but I was confused at the behaviour of the characters towards one another. There really was nothing except lust, and it’s quite clear since their first encounter. But, I did like Eyre as a character in general, and they worked together well.

I do have to say that this book did have its ups as well. Some of the concepts in this book were very interesting though. I love how the author twisted elements that appear in books and our perception of creatures alike. It was interesting. This sounded like something right up my alley so I’m kind of sad that I didn’t like it more, but you can’t love everything I guess.

I enjoyed this book. I very much liked the premise that the giant Wall Street companies had demons secretly working for them which created their wealth and power. Kind of makes sense. At first the language was a bit salty for me, but as I got to know Nora it became part of her character and didn’t distract. I was also intrigued by the ancient magic practices that were so every-day-normal to the characters. I would like to read more about Nora and her experiences.
