For a novice like myself, a great overview of English dialects, with an obvious (and expected) focus on the British Isles. The accompanying discussions on the difficulties of dialect research and preservation were interesting as well.

Heavy on phonetics, but chapter on semantics is good. The syntax chapter is quite good andwhat he trms "accidence" explains many irregularities in the modern language.
