Oscar Brand was born on a wheat farm near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on February 7, 1920. He received a degree in psychology from Brooklyn College. In 1942, he joined the Army, where he worked in the psychology section of an induction center and edited a newspaper for psychiatric patients. After mostra altro his discharge, he focused on music. Besides performing and recording folk music, he wrote books, articles, and the scores for Broadway musicals and documentary films. One of his books was entitled How to Play the Guitar Better Than Me. For more than 70 years, he hosted the radio show Folksong Festival. In 1995, he won a Peabody Award for "more than 50 years in service to the music and messages of folk performers and fans around the world."
