Kiki Archer

I'm cruising through Amazon looking for funny. Looking for easy. Looking for a HEA. When I stumbled upon this recently released gem. If you are in the mood for rom-com where both characters are adorably quirky, I'd recommend this read.

It is sweet and any storyline tension are soon made to easy sailing. The dialogue is wonderfully snappy and funny from all the main and supporting characters. It's like watching a perfect comedy of errors to have one you think you can't have be the one for you. Lauren and Rachel were completely relatable in their story. It's difficult to move from best friends to lovers. They trip a bit getting there, but in the end the story leaves you with a warm HEA.

Connie Parker is in her early twenties and mother of a three-year-old. She had got pregnant without quite planning for it and chooses to be a stay-at-home mom. Her relationship with her boyfriend, Kurt, isn’t all that great. In fact, the author has written a very realistic relationship where both want to try making it better each time they are alone, but the interaction is so broken that together they just cannot get it right. Connie sublimates her romanticism into writing during those little pockets of time that bringing up her baby gives her.

During one of her kiddie-activity she meets Maria, another mom with a three-year-old. Maria is completely put together, seemingly out-of-Connie’s-league rich, warm, funny and openly gay. Maria extends the hand of friendship to Connie and slowly they start spending time together.

As Connie’s relationship with Kurt deteriorates, her relationship with Maria thrives and grows…so much so that the book she is writing began with cynicism about love and is growing into a romance.

L is For is an outstanding anthology; I didn't skip a single selection which almost never happens when I read a short story collection.

I discovered authors "new" to me and would highly recommend Angela Peach, Karen Campbell and Andrea Bramshall. (Kiki Archer is already a favorite and her contribution is very funny.) This collection is definitely a must!

There's lots of lovely writing and the distinct British feel it has both warms my heart and tickles my funny bones, depending on the title. Every story is a keeper, but I do have some absolute favorites:

"Alana Molton-Croft And Me" by Kiki Archer is rip-roaring funny, clever and a delight to read! :)

"Looking For Princess Charming" by Deborah Underwood: It's a very true to life look at what many singles know can be a horrid dating scene, with a lovely ending.

"Cloud Hearts" by Angela Peach: This is one of the sweetest stories I've ever read, anywhere. I teared up a few times.

"Feels Like Home" by Sarah Bolger is aptly titled and adorably sweet, especially as the two main characters discover what's been right under their noses the whole time.

"The Butterfly Collector" by Karen Campbell is touching and sad, yet ultimately uplifting.

"Just The Way You Are" by Andrea Bramhall: After reading this, I definitely want to check out more fiction by this writer. It has a slow build which is always nice in romantic fiction.

I could go on and on about L Is For, but I won't. Instead, I'll just add this: buy yourself a copy right away and start reading! :) Proceeds go to charity!… (altro)

I am a critical editorial reader, but aside from the terrible title, this book was a surprise. It was well written, and well paced. I did notice a couple of typos and a little bit of head jumping in places, but not so bad it was hard to follow. It was a refreshing read, finally someone who got it right! Clearly teacher/student story-lines can be so cliche filled it's impossible to read the things and I am sometimes loathe to touch them, probably because the market is saturated with more forward American based material (sorry Yanks!). It was nice to read one based in England citing small quirks of speech and environment I could immediately relate to, perhaps that and its underlying subtlety was why it flowed so well for me. This was delivered well and superbly avoided the plot-what-plot horrors of many in the sub-genre. I would read more by this author.… (altro)
