Breve biografia: Sylvia is a great reader, whose preference in fiction is for thrillers and historical romances. She married Simon Andrew, the boy next door, and they have one daughter, Catherine, who is married and works in London. Catherine lives in Maidenhead quite near the river, and they have a small house in Normandy, which they visit whenever they can. They are great travelers — from a shopping weekend in Paris to a three week tour of Vietnam on a bicycle!

They both took early retirement and now live in the West Country with their dog and cat. Simon is an active town councillor in Crewkerne, and very well-known there. Until Sylvia retired she was busy to write, Teaching full-time as vice principal of a large comprehensive sixth form college, while also running a house and a family didn't really give her much time. She never attempted to have anything published before she sent in her first historical romance to Mills & Boon, in the days when the series was called "Masquerade." She was somewhat flabbergasted — though absolutely delighted — when it was accepted. Perdita first appeared in 1991, and she is still surprised at the idea of herself as a writer.

Miss Winbolt And The Fortune Hunter di Sylvia Andrew

Hmmm, I’m 59% in and we FINALLY have some angst, in one of my favorite forms, too: the overheard insult. But instead of enjoying a nice, reassuring grovel from the hero for being caught calling the heroine plain, he chastises her and calls her a drama queen. And then her best friend tells her she is being fickle and betraying him and that she owes him an apology... this is not the kind of angst I enjoy...

Well, shoot. Prime set-up, but overall this was not to my liking. I felt like the intrigue overshadowed the romance a bit, and the romance itself wasn’t to my tastes. I can overlook a book’s squeaky-cleanness if it caters to my tastes, but this did the opposite. I thought it was ridiculous how everyone treated Emily for reacting in a PERFECTLY REASONABLE WAY after overhearing a conversation about William being in search of a rich wife, that Maria Fenton was his first choice, and him saying Emily is plain and strong-minded. I wanted him to be groveling and REASSURING HER given that she is the one who was insecure and hurt, but no, SHE is the one who ends up groveling, because she supposedly should have known that William isn’t a fortune hunter??? When he gave her no reason to think he had any particular regard for her, having only offered a marriage of convenience? And everyone else piles the blame on her, so we end up spending the rest of the book with her cast as a shrew and she is never comforted or reassured, but instead begs William’s forgiveness. Leaving aside that this is the opposite of what I prefer in my HRs, it just seems unfair. It’s a shame too, as this was primed to be just the kind of tale I like, with a plain, insecure spinster and overheard insult. Oh well. (2.5 stars)… (altro)

An Unreasonable Match (The Steepwood Scandal, #7) di Sylvia Andrew

I liked this, but it could have used a bit more angst IMO. I liked the cipher plot, but I feel like it and some of the side characters occasionally overshadowed the romance. I was a bit surprised by Hester’s lack of insecurity and I would have liked more groveling, but overall enjoyed it.

Lord Calthorpe's Promise (Historical Romance) di Sylvia Andrew

This book has the same basic set-up as Mary Balogh's "Slightly Married." However, Andrew takes it in a completely different direction. This book is charming in its own way, the classic story of how two people who hate each other from the beginning end up loving each other at the end. It's well written and rather clever, although it is important to state that there is no sex whatsoever in this book. And I found it a bit annoying at the end how it went so obviously into the next story instead of ending this one with a nice satisfying sex scene. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this book, and would pick up the other ones in the series if I see them.… (altro)
