In this book the main character is Anna, she goes into detail explaining what her daily activities consist of. Anna also explains what a typical season is like for her family and her. One evening in particularly there is a fire however, her family over comes it right away. Anna resumes her life as regular she continues to engage in agriculture activities. She helps with the horses, hay, chickens and much more. Finally we get to see what a birthday looks like for her. She spends the day with her mother, father, uncles, aunts and cousins. They eat cake and play games such as volleyball. Finally she begins fourth grade and explains that Amish children have so many chores on the farm therefore they never receive any homework. They speak Pennsylvania Dutch at her school. Overall, this book is quite lengthy as it goes into depth of all of the different traditions that they celebrate. I think it would be an appropriate book for higher grade levels to teach them the unique differences other cultures have.… (altro)

This book is about how the Amish community celebrates Christmas. It describes how it is celebrated without lights and decorated trees, but it is spread across two days, where the traditional Christmas is celebrated in one day. The gifts are not the main part of the day, and are received after farm chores are done. There are also countlessactivities to do with friends and families.

This book is written from a young Amish girls perspective. She walks the readers through a year of her life from spring all the way through the following winter. During the spring time the girl explains how happy it is for them and how they all get to fly kites and run around. Every season is explained and the joys and the chores of each of them go into detail. I liked this book because it will show the children a culture that most of them probably do not know anything about.

I would use this in a class of third graders to show them a different culture in order to teach them to be more accepting and warm them up and make them more familiar with other ways of life. It's a great book to use to show the culture of the Amish people. You could also use this to have them start to compare using ven diagrams their lives compared to others.
