Particularly interesting novel about the trials and tribulations of a Scottish female executive who accepts a prestigious position heading a new information institute in Perth, Western Australia. She discovers that not everyone wishes her well and that she has descended into a hotbed of politics and corruption. She also has her own personal problems to deal with. This would be an interesting read in itself, but as it's written about my home town, and by my former CEO it has deeper interest. It's not a crude "roman a clef" (the author is too smart for that) but it does shine a somewhat depressing light into the corridors of power in Western Australia (alas quite believable given the WA Inc scandals of the 1980s). And she has some fun by placing the Institute's new headquarters on prime Perth river-front land - only Perth people will know how controversial such a siting would be! If you come from Perth you should read this... if you don't it will be a good read anyway. Some of the earlier sections are a little bit repetitive, but persevere and you'll be rewarded.
