Go figure. I love chocolate and hate sushi, but when it comes to graphic novels I prefer Franchi Alarcon's The Art of Sushi to this one about chocolate. The sushi book just had more charm and energy thanks to the travel, the locale, and the colorful plates of food. Here, despite a brief sojourn to Peru near the end, we're mostly stuck in the same workshop in France talking to the same guy and the food presentation is flat and mired in swaths of brown.

I have taken one bite of sushi and plan to never eat sushi again, but as I've said before, make a graphic novel of it and I will read about any old subject.

I was surprised that I stayed engaged with this travelogue about the world of sushi preparation in Japan and France, even through all its digressions into ceramics, rice farming, sake production, and knife making. The love of the subject matter shines through the author's narration, and even though I'd never put them in my mouth, the examples of sushi presented are colorful and gorgeous.

I need to check out the author's other book on chocolate, because that I eat.

graphic nonfiction (originally published in French)

it really is an art, with extreme attention to detail (from keeping parasites out of your food, to humanely killing and preserving the freshness of the fish, to making the perfect vinegared rice, to selecting a sake that best complements your dish, and so on) with the end result being a supreme bite of deliciousness (and a few bites that are definitely an acquired taste).

Very readable and incredibly absorbing. Also recommended: "Jiro dreams of Sushi"… (altro)

If there is any industry even tangentially related to preparing, serving, or eating sushi, the creators of this book have found someone to interview about that. Lots of pictures and descriptions of people doing work with their hands, really satisfying and educational.
