I was a big fan of the extremely strange Sunflower by Gyula Krúdy and so I was eager to read this collection of short stories. They turn out to also be strange, but in a very different way. Most of them involve the frequenters of taverns in 1920s Hungary, and while the characters and plots are different, all of the stories feature a lot of detail about food, almost too much (both food and detail), and also mostly involve love and death. I liked the longish "The Green Ace" the best, but didn't find any of the stories truly compelling, although they certainly paint a picture of a time and a place. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Life is a Dream (1931) is Gyula Krudy's magical collection of ten short stories. Creating a world where editors shoot themselves after a hard day's brunching, men attend duels incognito and lovers fall out over salad dressing, Life is a Dream is a comic, nostalgic, romantic and erotic glimpse into the Hungary of the early twentieth century. Focussing on the poor and dispossessed, these tales of love, food, death and sex are ironic and wise about the human condition and the futility of life, and display fully Krudy's wit and mastery of the form.
