Like most Manhattanites, aspiring artist Tate can't resist a good rental deal - even if it's in the city's strangest neighbourhood, Golgotham, where for centuries werewolves, centaurs and countless other creatures have roamed the streets. Her new landlord is a sorcerer named Hexe, who is determined to build his reputation without using dark, left-hand magic. As Tate is drawn into Hexe's fascinating world, they both find that the right hand does not always know what the left hand is doing - and avoiding darkness is no easy trick.… (altro)

A friend told me about this book, saying the main character went to Wellesley. As my friends know, my alma mater is enough to get me to read something. I'd read Collins' Sonja Blue books and liked them so those two things were enough to get me to try this.

He also told me that Tate was a mundane in an urban fantasy world. I like it. It's different. I was hoping it would be a new way to look at urban fantasy. It was and it wasn't. Tate was too comfortable, I thought. More comfortable than I thought was logical in this situation. She moved into Golgotham, was suddenly surrounded by magic, strange foods, wizard battles on the street, and centaurs & satyrs pulling hansom cabs. Aside from a few mentions of the newness, she accepts things.

Tate's a sculptor. Based on the descriptions of her work, she's a pretty good one. I wish we'd gotten to know more about that, though her sculptures to play a fairly important role in the story.

I feel as if I'm downplaying this story. Looking back on it, it's as if not much happened, but that isn't true. There were attacks and rescues and discoveries. But what I liked most were the characters. I smell found family all over this and I like it. ( )

Amazingly good world building and loved the different characters we're introduced to but unfortunately the dialogue between the main characters was weak which I felt gave the book an almost YA feel despite being an adult Uf. I'm hoping the next book in the series is better and lives up to the enormous potential I feel that this series has. ( )

The only reason it took me two days to finish this book was I had to sleep! In this beginning of a trilogy, Tate builds metal sculptures that come to life. Hexe makes potions and lifts curses. Around them Golgotham, a hidden section of New York, swirls with politics, centaurs and leprechauns, magic, and love!

I really enjoyed this book. It had a fresh new taste to it, for an urban fantasy. Also, the girl on the cover is modestly dressed for the genre's covers. I think the world is something new and the characters are well written and people (and beings) that I would be happy to know and be friends with, well most of them.

I like the oddities of the characters in this story. They each have their own thing and it makes them more real to the reader's eyes. I enjoyed traveling through NYC and Golgotham. Although, I couldn't help but think of batman as I read the name sometimes (don't judge).

I enjoyed the whole two people from two worlds, yet similar feel for Tate and Hexe (and I just heart Hexe, he is pretty bad-ass). I think that this series has a TON of potential and I will keep a watch out for future installments. ( )

I found this book to be very childish. The main character Tate reminded me of a 12 year old even though she is in her 20s. She has issues with her parents and acts like it is a big surprise that she isn't the only one. As for Hexe, he talks like a 70 yr old man and is an extremely boring character. The world they live in is very intriguing. However, due to a poorly executed plot and annoying characters, it doesn't pan out. ( )
