"Sure you've heard of America's Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner, and you might even recall that he lived in Oxford, Miss. But did you know that he wrote an outline for a novel on his study walls and that you can still see it there? And did you realize that if you visit Longfellow's house in Cambridge, Mass., you can view the writing table where he penned the poem "The Song of Hiawatha"? (You also can savor an authentic Colonial meal in The Wayside Inn, in operation since 1716, that he made famous.) And where would you find Mark Twain's octagonal study and burial place? On a visit to Elmira, N.Y." "These tantalizing tidbits are part of travel writer B.J. Welborn's latest book, Traveling Literary America. The descendant of Jamestown settlers, Welborn has criss-crossed the country several times while researching projects. This time, she set out to find as many sites across America that reveal our literary heritage as she could. What she found was more than 200 homes, museums, exhibits, literary walks, memorials, monuments and imaginative tributes in nearly all 50 states." "Her explorations and meticulous research have come together to produce an important book that fills a void in the story of the country that pioneered great literary movements and produced influential writers. Until now, travelers and lovers of literature had no comprehensive guide to the exciting places where America's literary lions lived, wrote or set their literary masterpieces. Traveling Literary America fills that void and takes readers on a journey through our country's rich literary heritage. A must-have for history, travel and literary buffs alike! Book jacket."--Jacket.… (altro)

While Welborn claims to have written "A Complete Guide to Literary Landmarks," this doesn't quite live up to its billing -- not every literary site in America is included. That said, it was a great reference for planning our literary roadtrip through the South and Southwest this summer. Welborn also includes good information about the sites she highlights -- Location, Frame of Reference, Significance, About the Site, Hot Tips, The Best Stuff, The Writer and His/Her Work, and Elsewhere in the Area. I'd also recommend it as an interesting book to dip in and out for armchair travelers and readers of American lit. ( )

How good to see a guide book to American literary sites.

For anyone interested in the book depicted on the cover, a search at books.google.com revealed the book to be Drop City by T. Coraghessan Boyle, page 197.

I was delighted to see the Ellen Glasgow house in Richmond included in the book. One note though, Ms. Glasgow won the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 for her novel In This Our Life. As far as I know, The Sheltered Life did not win a Pulitzer Prize. ( )

While it is not a book that I would read cover-to-cover, "Traveling Literary America" is certainly a useful reference book--for travelers, readers, and especially traveling readers. Thoroughly researched and well-organized, "Traveling Literary America" is an important volume in any bibliophile's library. ( )

This is hardly a "complete" guide to literary America. I've been to many of the sites listed, but I've also been to a number of others, of not-so-obscure writers.
