The Believer monthly books and culture magazine is three-time finalist for National Magazine Awards in General Excellence and Design. An amiable yet rigorous forum for books and book criticism,The Believer provides an alternative to the plot summary that has increasingly become synonymous with "book review," extending the ever-shortening shelf life of new books, reviving interest in books long overlooked, and stressing the interconnectivity of books to pop culture, politics, art, and music. To that end, each issue includes essays on these topics, as well as lengthy interviews with philosophers, politicians, and poets. Nick Hornby has a widely celebrated monthly books column, and Amy Sedaris (and well-known guest-columnists) offers an advice column comprised of hilariously bad advice. The celebrated graphic novelist Charles Burns illustrates the cover each month, and the magazine is littered with illustrations by a wide range of established and emerging artists, with regulars like Tony Millionaire, Marcel Dzama, and others.… (altro)

Morrie Turner and the Kids by Jeff Chang ~~ Early comics and racism. - I learned something I didn't know and had never thought about before.

I Am Astonished at the Sunflowers Spinning: A new poem by Derek Walcott ~~ Decent but not memorable.

Sedaratives by Elizabeth Beckwith ~~ Mildly amusing. The first time I've found them so. Are the last two questions the same as the month before?

The Fifth Wedding by Michelle Tea ~~ Odd. Not sure what to make of it. It had points but not cohesiveness. The written form of performance art about performance art.

The Rhinoceros in the Hall by Alan Michael Parker ~~ The history of the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the role of art museums. ~ Maybe interesting at parts but couldn't stay interested. Disjointed.

Musin’s and Thinkin’s by Jack Pendarvis ~~ Who doesn't like Henry David Thoreau? ~ Odd and oddly southern. Readable.

The Disappearance of Ford Beckman by Michael Paul Mason ~~ Short biography of a living artist I hadn't heard of. ~ A good read.

Creative Accounting: Two Photographs by Chris Benz ~~ Previous columns seem pricey but expected for whichever art form. The cost of the photos seemed way high with the cost of the cameras and lenses included, which I do not think should have been, but more okay without them.

Real Life Rock Top Ten by Greil Marcus ~~ I've started skimming this column. It's only interesting or understandable if you know the subjects addressed.

Discover Kymaerica by Michael A. Elliott ~~ An artist creates an alternate history of the world with physical markers throughout the world. ~ Quite an interesting read and quite interesting that someone came up with the concept to do this.

Jerry Moriarty in conversation with Chris Ware ~~ JM is a painter-cartoonist. ~ Interesting conversation. His work is thoughtful and slightly creepy.

Aline Kominsky-Crumb interviewed by Hillary Chute ~~ AKC is an early female comic author. ~ Meh interview.

Schema: Forensic Sketches of Literary Criminals by Joshua Cohen ~~ Cool idea with suprisingly good results.

Peter Blegvad interviewed by Franklin Bruno ~~ Enjoyed the thoughts more than the facts.

“Comics” edited by Alvin Buenaventura ~~ I expected these to be better.

Andrea Zittel interviewed by Katie Bachner ~~ Quite interesting works and ideas. ( )
