The Blue Angles, written by Carrie A. Braulick, is an informational book intended for young readers. The main idea behind this informational book is to inform its young audience on who the Blue Angels are, what they do, and how they became to be. In my opinion, Braulick does a great job conveying this message to her readers through real life illustrations, simple yet comprehensive writing, and the added “Blazer Facts” to emphasize the reading.

The illustrations are actual pictures taken from events where the Blue Angles have performed, thus, making what the text says become real to the readers. Furthermore, if some readers have been to a Blue Angles show, the pictures become more interesting, and again, making the text more exciting to read.

Next, I feel as though the writing on each page was well written: it was flowing, simple, comprehensive, and paired well with each illustration. For example, one a page the title was “Formations and Maneuvers,” and the text reads, “Formations are part of each air show. The main formation is the delta.” A young reader could read this information and retain the information very easily. Also, the picture to coincide with the text was an actual picture of the five Blue Angles in the formation of a delta with the word “Delta” next to the picture.

Finally, I thought it was a great tactic for this children’s informational book to have added fact bubbles scattered throughout the book. I feel as though the “Blazer Facts” emphasized the reading. Here is an example to support my opinion: “A large C-130 Hercules plane carries supplies to Blue Angel air shows. The Blue Angles call it Fat Albert.” And the “Blazer Fact” to go along with that says, “Fully loaded, Ft Albert weighs more than 10 African elephants.” A child reading this fact can now get an idea of how large in size this Fat Albert really is; it emphasizes the text!

I enjoyed this children informational book while listening to my sister reading it out loud to me. ( )
