The striking debut novel from award-winning writer Pete Fromm Abilene and Austin, a sister and brother frustrated with the small-town Texas life their parents have chosen, turn to each other to escape the story they're all too tired of hearing: their father's unvarying account of "How All This Started"-how he met their mother then settled down in the middle of nowhere.Pinning her dreams on her younger brother, Abilene becomes dead-set on making Austin a pitching star, a "fireballer" like Nolan Ryan. Swept up in her irresistible exuberance, they try, with baseball and firearms, to combat the stagnation of the Texas landscape - so fiercely it's uncertain whether either of them will survive Abilene's manic dreams.Introducing one of the most memorable female characters in contemporary literature, How All This Started portrays with strength and subtlety the visceral bond between a brother and sister.… (altro)

This was a beautiful book. It was tough to read at times. Fromm does an incredible job of showing the relationships between family members forced to deal with a girl with manic-depressive disorder. The story was rich, and the characters are definitely memorable. ( )

The main characters from this book lingered in my head days after I finished the book. Even today, I would like to know how they are.

Abliene, the sister, is a runaway locomotive, how exciting and terrifying it would be to be in her presence. Austin, the brother, needs a knot slapped on top of his head, but you understand why he is as he is, and fear you would be like him if in his shoes. Abliene has the controls. The parents are faced with a heart breaking situation and seem ill prepared to deal with it, but are they really?

Readers should read this book because of the emotional ride the writer takes you on. Wannabe writers should read this book to learn how he does it. ( )

ARGH! I couldn't wait to read this book. I received it through ILL, but then the holiday season set in. I hope to pick it up again in January.
