A lot has been revealed about the Emergent Church's theology in the last year since DeWaay's book was released, but DeWaay seems to have been at least a year ahead of most others on this topic. McLaren's new book has only gone to support DeWaay's conclusions, and reemphasizes how much this movement needs to the Gospel.

DeWaay tackles the theology of the Emergents persuasively and directly, not out of scorn or ridicule, but to call their leaders and followers to repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole book, while thoughtfully written and extensively researched, is above all a call for those caught up in the movement to Christ -- the real Christ -- and to life.

The Emergent movement is a tempting movement, one that was luring me for some time. But it does not preach the Gospel, and so those of us who have seen what it is and rejected it do pray for wisdom and humility for those involved, that God will bring about a submission to the truth in them. DeWaay's work will continue to be used by the Spirit to that end. ( )
