NCLA Review - The author is chair of Solidaridad, the InterChurch Foundation for Action for Latin America, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Quoting liberally and often from both the Old and New Testaments, he offers a biblically based alternative to current economic systems. Although he recommends keeping a Bible at hand while reading this book, a helpful index of Scriptural texts is included. Haan divides this highly readable work into four sections: a biblical understanding of costs; the origin and nature of economic injustice; a meditation on the Fifth Commandment; and, an elaboration on today's economic worlds. Each of the 21 chapters are designed to support one another, but have been written to stand on their own for ease in personal or group study. While this work would be of value at any time, in troubling economic days such as ours, this would be a relevant and worthwhile addition to your church library. In this short, hard-hitting volume, Roelf Haan critiques the assumptions that underlie our current economic system and makes the case for a truly biblical alternative. The Economics of Honor walks through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, but it blazes an unfamiliar path. Through careful exegesis Haan draws economic insights from surprising passages and challenges conventional interpretations of some of Jesus' parables. Haan also draws insights from a wide-ranging number of thinkers, including John Calvin, Jacques Ellul, Ren&ThΗ Girard, Germaine Greer, and several Latin American liberation theologians. A provocative and fascinating read, The Economics of Honor challenges accepted economic wisdom and exchanges it for groundbreaking, well-reasoned arguments on how the Bible would have us live today.
