This the biography of Ida B. Wells, noted black journalist and founder of the organization which would eventually become the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). This book takes us through her birth in 1862, Mississippi, to her eventual run for Senate in 1930. Ida Wells was born to two slave parents and saw first-hand, the inequities of race and civil rights. She began as a teacher and eventually became a writer when she experienced racism herself on a Memphis train. Her passion and drive to see change kept her pen busy and she eventually organized one of the first economic boycotts. She continued her activism and eventually wrote the book "The Red Record" about lynching and treatment of black males. She went on to join Susan B. Anthony in the suffrage movement as she understood that women's voting rights were critical in attaining black civil rights. Ida Wells is an important voice in history. This is a wonderfully illustrated biography with watercolor and ink and adds to the history of the era. This is appropriate for grades 2-5. ( )

I had mixed feelings about the book Ida B. Wells: Let the Truth Be Told by Walter Dean Myers. While the language is descriptive it is a bit convoluted at times. The characters are extremely believable because they are real people that actually existed in history. The illustrations were my favorite part as they fit the style in which the book was written in and were appropriate for the mood of the story. The message of the book was to give readers a brief background about a historical figure. ( )

“Ida B. Wells- Let the Truth be Told” had very neat page layouts which is what I liked most about the book. Sometimes, the illustrations would be large and dramatic and sometimes they would be small and just to show the reader of something from that time period, such as a newspaper clipping. The illustrations added extra information for the reader. Also, the way the quotes were set up was very cool. All of her quotes were in different colors and fonts from the rest of the story and included a citation. At the end of the book, there was a page dedicated to the different quotes from the book. The main idea of this book was to inform readers about Ida B. Wells and how she fought for Civil Rights. ( )
