The stories are vivid, some very stark, and all memorable. I cannot say there is a failure in the book--11 stories, many farm-related or small-town Iowa related, most with a Catholic relationship. The characters in the stories are often most non-reluctant to say the most indiscreet or blunt things. "The Balers" and "Margaret" are bitter vignettes of cramped farm life, but there are stories such as "The Man with the Leopard Wallpaper" and "Called for Action" and "The Secrets that Men Have" which are heart-warming and extremely memorable. This book is a delight and I recommend it to anyone--not only to those who have a connection to Iowa rural Catholic life. ( ) nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
"A poignant, truth-telling collection about what it means to grow up female in the rural Midwest where gender elevates or dooms a person. Readers will cheer for these ingenious women who survive hard lessons and exact revenge with a glee and courage that makes them irresistible!"--Jonis Agee These women "challenge a parent's cold-heartedness, revenge themselves on hypocritical neighbors, announce prison records, infiltrate the Knights of Columbus. They are so much fun to read," Lisa Sandlin writes, "because they refuse to back down--and stand ready to accept the consequences." "We care about her beloved, vanishing characters in small towns and on nearby farms."--Josip Novakovich. Tricia Currans-Sheehan grew up in Iowa, where she teaches at Briar Cliff University.
