This collection of Baker's NYT Observer columns range from the early 1960's to 1989, and covers the usual wide range of topics. Deliciously funny observations, many of which are profoundly serious beneath the banter. My, but I miss "The Observer". ( )

A selection of Russell Baker's columns from his entire career, some 3,800 that he culled from. Most of them are the Art Buchwald type of humor (though better done) that I could do with less of, but scattered throughout are a few of his serious columns and autobiographical bits, especially in the last chapter. Baker is one of the best wordsmiths around; I wish he would stretch himself more. ( )
