Against all possible odds, the hero Carter and his dual evil-personality Kade, attempt to usurp the madman Durell from destroying the planet. In principle this should be a good book. There is plenty of action, written in a way that ensures the scenarios are easy to imagine. However, for the main part it is repetitive fight scenes in which the characters take a extraordinary beating and just keep on going. Where Spiral was a showcase for the indestructible Carter, Quake unleashes the equally indestructible Kade, and this is the book's salvation. Kade is mean. Kade brings a little edge to what is a real no-brainer. The final nail though is the plot. Ancient mega-technology? Come on. Everything in Quake is exaggerated, from the heroes to the despicable villains, and it all makes for a really easy way to pass the time, but is not a book that you will want to read twice.
