Written by an American woman priest in Tokyo, it's actually much less hokey (as in, not hokey at all) and much more interesting a read than I'd expected. The author is clearly intelligent, and her observations on Japanese culture astute. The book is also interesting in that its main focus is not of the 'so what's enlightenment like?' variety, but rather the mundane, day-in-and-day-out aspects of Buddhist life. Asking about Zen is a user-friendly introduction to Zen by an American Zen priest presiding over a temple in Japan. Sargent covers all aspects - teachings, practice, the priesthood, temples and temple life, religious services, Zen etiquette, and general characteristics of Japanese Buddhism. The question-and-answer format makes the book highly accessible to the novice, yet Sargent goes into considerable detail when appropriate, providing an insider's look at Zen life and practice that will illuminate even the advanced Zen student.
