This book shows different families that have children with special needs and emphasizes that they are no less of a person because of their disability. There are real photographs for the illustrations which shows how some disabilities can be seen on the outside. The language is written in an easy way for children to understand and follow, for such a heavy topic. I like that the focus of this book is positive and does not focus on the things the children are missing out on because of their disability. This book has a more positive outlook and shows that the children can still play, make friends, and just do "normal" things even though they have a disability. ( )

The book Brothers and Sisters is an informational book that shows that some families have brothers and sisters will special needs, but that doesn't mean they are any less. I liked this book for a lot of reasons. Because its an informational book it has real photographs of kids with disabilities I think this helps readers understand what constitutes a disability- can it be seen on the outside? I also I liked this book because the language is clear and descriptive. Whenever they introduce someone in the family the author says "This is our sister.." The author explains things in a manner that is easily understood for children, for example "This is our sister, Eubie. She is six. Eubie's brain was hurt when she was born. It is hard for her brain to tell her body what she wants to do." The author does a fantastic job of using age appropriate language, because some of the material is heavy. Finally, I really like that the book pushes readers to broaden their perspectives. When I picked up the book I originally thought it was just about the roles brothers and sisters play in a household, but it really was about siblings that have disabilities and what that looks like and what that entails for the family. It shows children that all families and siblings are different, and thats okay. ( )

This books shows that there are many families that have at least one child with disabilities but it also shows how they are able to do many things like play and have fun with their siblings.

this book tells about having a brother or sister with a special needs. There is a child that was born with half an arm, one that has hearing aid, one with a brain injury, downs syndrome. But the focus is always the positive and what they can do, or what it is like in their house.

I enjoyed this informational text aimed at informing people that children with disabilities have similar relationships with their siblings as "normal" children and their siblings. The book describes and defines various disabilities while simultaneously providing the message that children with disabilities are still able to do "normal" things and have regular relationships with their siblings.
I liked how the author divided the book into sections told from different children's' point of views. Each narrator was a sibling of a child with a disability and described their brother or sister's condition and how it affects or does not affect their relationship. I liked how this point of view made it easy for the reader to connect and relate to the story. For example, Sophie tells a story about how her brother Charlie has Aspergers and loves video games. Sophie finds it difficult to gain Charlie's attention when he is playing one of his beloved video games so she climbs on top of him. I was able to relate to Sophie because when I was little and wanted to play with my older cousins while they were playing video games I literally had to stand in front of the television or climb on top of them.
I also enjoyed the glossary that the author provided at the end of the book. The glossary provided useful definitions of the medical terms used to describe the different conditions of the children with disabilities. As a reader, the glossary helped to comprehend the disabilities that the characters in the story contained. For example, I sometimes forget the accurate definition of Cerebral Palsy but with the assistance of the glossary I was able to understand the disability. ( )
