Fiction. Mystery. While researching for a local history, librarian Juanita Wills comes across the unsolved 1959 murder of a black teenager, Luther Dunlap, in her then all-white town. When her only witness is poisoned, Juanita fears that her questions have led to his death, but the more she learns about Luther, the charmer who was killed on the Wyndham High School track, the more determined she is to bring his killer to justice. I still mostly like this series because the mysteries are compelling and the characters are all done very well. My hesitation in down-right loving the series is the main characters insistence in doing things that are TSTL (too stupid to live). Her boyfriend is a cop and she keeps things from him, she goes into areas where she is in danger, she actually steals something from the police station (a copy of a file) in this book. These things bother me - especially the going into police files just because she's curious. I'll probably read the next book in the series because I do enjoy most of the stories but I hope she starts learning from her experiences and exhibits more caution while doing her amateur sleuthing. Librarian Juanita Wills of Wyndham, Oklahoma has undertaken a project to write the town's history. She stumbles across an unsolved race-related murder from 1959 and is determined to investigate it. Using her history as her reason to investigate, she meets up with a lot of people who won't share what they recall about that night. Of course, she encounters a few attempts on her life along the way. Her boyfriend is the local police chief who is very tight-lipped about his investigations. While I enjoyed some of the book, I found quite a bit to be implausible. I found some of the dialogue a bit flat. I had a hard time keeping up with which characters were black and which were white for over half the book even though I knew that the racial aspect was central. If the author had been more descriptive in introducing her characters in this installment, it might have been easier for the reader to distinguish. ( )

This mystery is fun (for librarians anyway) because of the background story:the main character works in a library. I like the storyline that investigates racism both past and present in a small town. That said,it was good but not great writing. ( )
