Sarah was a young girl who lived on the edge of a forest with her Aunt Mag, a formerly kindhearted witch who had been transformed into a terror by a spell gone wrong. One night, while seeking toads for one of Aunt Mag's awful spells, Sarah met and befriended Oakhorn the unicorn, and the two became close companions. Then Aunt Mag discovered their friendship, decided to kill the unicorn, in order to gain his powers. Would Sarah and her woodland friends be able to save Oakthorn...?

Husband and wife team Bruce and Katherine Coville, who also collaborated on the beginning reader fairy-tale, The Foolish Giant, deliver an engaging work of fantasy here, one suitable for children just getting going with independent reading. Sarah's Unicorn is part of Lippincott's I-Like-To-Read collection, and pairs a simple text with black and white pencil drawings on each page. Recommended to beginning readers who enjoy fantastic stories, particularly those involving unicorns. ( )

I liked this book okay. IT is not one of my favorite fantasy books, but it has some strengths. Sarah is suffering at the hands of Aunt Mag, who is now evil from a spell gone wrong. She befriends a unicorn whom her aunt tries to capture. He evades capture and life the spell so she is kind again. The plot is extremely simple and easy to follow. The rising action, climax, and falling action all are paced and not completely unpredictable. The characters are not as well developed as I would like, which is a weakness in my opinion. The drawings on every page are only black and white. I find them not attractive or helpful to the story, but that is just my opinion. The simplicity of good vs evil and evil winning can be a strength in some uses of the book, but not in others. It does not leave too much room for higher level thinking. But, it is still a cute little fantasy story. ( )

I read this book when this bok when I was in 3rd grade, so it may be a bit off. Sarah lived with her Aunt Mag, at the time Aunt Mag was evil. Sarah befriends the unicorn and tries to keep Aunt Mag from finding out. Although soon enough, she does! What will happen next? Read it and find out! ( )

A sad to happy story about a young girl who lives with her mean relative who happens to be a witch. She is befriended by a beautiful and kind unicorn. The story has a happy ending for everyone.

Sarah's Unicorn is the story of Sarah and her evil witch Aunt Mag. Aunt Mag was once a good witch, but a spell gone bad turned her evil. Sarah is being mistreated and is very sad, but she finds a friend in a unicorn. When Aunt Mag finds out about the unicorn, she tries to steal his magic, but instead it turned back into her normal self. This fantasy book's characters are the stereotypical good and bad people. There is no in between. And the theme is good vs. bad in which good wins. The elements from fantasy as in magic, witches, unicorns, and animal friends are all present. There are only a few words on the page, so young children could easily read this to themselves or the a teacher of elementary age could use this books when teaching about fantasy and its elements. This is a good book for young elementary age children, especially if they like unicorns! ( )
